DS feeds sooo much!

Am delighted as bf is going well. DS is 2 weeks and put on 12oz last week!
I just wanted to ask if it's usual for bf babies to feed all evening? Feels like my boobs are empty. Is he getting enough or does his constant feeding mean he is hungry and unsatisified?? I am a complete bf novice and need advice! Thanks. D

Yes, he gets most upset and indignant if I try to remove boob. He only likes going to sleep latched on too.

DS used to feed FOR EVER

It does get better, honestly

hermykne · 24/09/2004 21:35

dinny my ds is 8wks now and he did the same for the first 3/4 wks. and i thought i had nothing left in them. but as twig says he is getting enough and more importantly stimulating you to produce more so the supply comes in and in a few more weeks it will settle and he will to, and the feeds will stretch out in the evening.
my ds was ravenous but it has all settled now and my boobs are still big but not as bad!!!

lulupop · 24/09/2004 21:36

Completely normal to feed all evening. Was he bog at birth? My DS was 8.11 and fed all the time between 6pm-11pm for the first few weeks. They settle down into their own routine.

Congratulations on such successful BF, and as long as you aren;t too tired, don't worry about the frequency of feeds, just let DS take what he needs.

If you are getting tired, try expressing a bit so DH/DP can give a bottle in the evening. That way you should at least get 3-4 hours unbroken sleep.

lulupop · 24/09/2004 21:37

Obviously meant BIG at birth. Had 2 glasses of wine for first time in ages - clearly can't take it any more

It is feeling quite hard at the moment so good to hear he will settle at some point, Hermykyne. He is a big boy (9lb2 at birth) so suppose he has to ensure a good supply for himself. Have sore nipple too {sad} Seen bf counsellor and latch is OK, apparently. Maybe it's frequency??

dinny my ds was 11/2 at birth, huge, and he fed constantly and i was drained, its realy only since 6wks that it has settled to 2 1/2hrs to 3hrs between feds and now he is up to 5 1/2 at night because he tanks himself up between 5 and 8pm. i feed him again at 10/11 and get a good stint then.
but yes its incredible hard and i have cried my eyes out on the bed feeding him, telling dh i cant do this but now 2wks later it is much better. especially when the feed stopped and not half an hour later he's on again.
then i think back to the day i b/f my dd for the last time at 6 mths and cried. so it will settle for you and do try the expressing as lulupop says and introducing the bottle for the odd feed, i am doing that at the moment , he's not keen !!!but i'll keep persisting.

lulupop i am having my glass of wine at the moment! cheers. and it has not affected him through my milk, a glass or 2 max at a time occasionally before the alrms start going!!

dinny · 24/09/2004 22:15

My God, hermykyne! 11/2! A whopper! Did you get sore nipples from so much feeding?

no. but the let down was sorer this time, 1st time never noticed it.

highlander · 28/09/2004 23:19

this is pretty reassuring. My 2 1/2 week ds goes on a frenzy from 7pm until 1am and my boobs feel a bit deflated. I was really starting to get anxious that I didn't have enough milk. Glad to hear most sprogs go through this phase. Doesn't stop me being in floods of tears every night though.......... the joys of motherhood

Well done for the bf dinny. Babys generally have a growth spurt around the 3 week mark & he could be preparing for that. Milk supply depends on demand so the more her feeds the more he'll get. Check the soreness - try Lansinoh pure lanolin cream so that the nipple doesn't dry out (the only cream recommended by La Leche League I think). Don't let wet breast pads stick to it! Try feeding in different positions so that the sore part doesn't always get the same hold by the baby. All the best
