Right boob has more milk

I know this topic has been done before, but thought I'd start it up again as I seem to be having this problem now. DD is now 10 weeks old, and breastfeeding beautifully, gaining loads of weight, and a very happy baby in general. The problem (if it IS a problem) is that I have loads of milk in my right boob, and what appears to be much less in my left. If I feed from my left, then the breastpad on my right is soaked through in seconds, whereas the other way round the pad hardly gets damp. Should I feed more from the left to encourage supply? Should I only feed from the right? Any suggestions? Thanks

feed more from the left to encourage the supply. I think it is pretty usual to have more in one than in the other and for your baby to have a preference which can make the situation more uncomfortable. Glad it is all going so well

Remember that breasts are different sizes to start off with so that can make you think one has more milk than the other. I found that I could only express good amounts of milk from the right breast and dribbles from the left. One just let down better than the other. I would just continue to feed equally from both breasts and not worry about it. Sounds as though you were like me and just let down milk faster on the right. Hand thing was that I knew I could express faster from the right side if needed and knew not to spend too much time on the left.

So that's the explanation mears...it figures, in my case at least. Doh!

Mears is right - as usual. I was just the same, and used to use breast shields to catch the milk leaking from my right boob to freeze later. Someone was around here the other day saying that breast shields can cause a vacuum and make leaking worse but that wasn't my experience.

Another thing I did which helped me enormously was to express from the right boob first thing in the morning before I offered her a feed, otherwise it came out too fast and dd would just throw it all back up again. Again, some people would say that would just encourage over-production but again, in my case, the benefits outweighed any possible problems.

In time the problem will ease, although you may always find you feed quicker from the one side.
