I've had a letter from my MP today, I asked him to sign EDM 1963. He says he's not clear on the labelling regulations for formula and follow-on milk. He's asking for background information.

I could cobble something together, but I'm thinking you're already going to have that information. What can I tell him that's concise, factual, and compels him to sign up? (He has small children, so must be familiar with the concept of feeding babies!)

Hunker is out for the day. I am sure she will get back to you asap.

NoBiggy · 13/08/2007 17:04

I was kind of thinking that! He also asked for more info on another matter I wrote to him about a while ago.

When he came round canvassing and I was asking questions he ran away.

Nevertheless, if I can give him the info without it taking him too long to read I'm hoping he will sign.

Oblomov, that would be very helpful.

I'll keep an eye out for her

He can check out the law here:

Basically, you need to inform him that formula promotion undermines breastfeeding and does not inform mothers who do use formula for whatever reason.

Follow on was brought out in the wake of legislation that prevented advertising of infant formula - as follow on is not 'infant' formula it is able to be advertised. Similar branding means they can covertly advertise infant formula via ads for follow on,

Cynical, and it's an unnecessary product anyway.

OK, will put something together for him later today.

Would you consider revealing who your MP is NoBiggy. i think this is an extraordinary letter. The House of Commons library exists to supply MPs with this sort of info. Once call to a library researcher would give him a well researched and comprehensive answer to this question. And for free. How odd to ask you.

artichokes · 14/08/2007 12:41

You could refer him to this link which has loads of background info www.babymilkaction.org/press/press20july07.html

NoBiggy · 14/08/2007 12:56

Artichokes, that's the whole thing in a nutshell in that link. Thanks very much.

I don't know if I should out him though!

Don't worry about outing him. Not sure why I asked. Was just amazed at his lazyness. Not only is the library there but he will have researchers paid for by the House who could have answered his query with a quick google.
