I normally avoid the breast & formula threads but I was interested to read the Nestle babmilk facts.

However think it's worth mentioning that in South Africa where BF is at 70%, that many newborns are abandoned, as mothers will not FF as their neighbours would then know they were HIV positive.

QOQ..yes availability could also be an issue...but sadly they don't have a problem with completely overpricing their product...in poor countries, a system where bf is the favoured feeding form and Formula is only available on free prescription where needed and everything else that goes wiht it would possibly a good system, as there is no denying that of course, no matter where in the world, sometimes bf is not an option.
Red...the HIV issue is one of those where, in the poor country a child actually would still benefit from receiving their mothers bm, even if she is infected, because they still have a greater survival rate...but sadly many of the HCP that are over there aren't even aware of the issue...i.e. Doctors from other countries helping out, etc...and trying to just treat in the same way as they would in a western country....
There was a interesting ER episode a few years back, where Carter helped out in Congo and automatically wanted to tell the HIV infected mohter she shouldn't bf but Formula feed and the local midwife shushing him and explaining to him , taking him aside, that as it si, the Baby has a better survival rate on bm...

Fluffy, Nestle really has done some rotten things and if they mention things like bf is best this is just because they have to, not because they want to....in the end they are interested in marketing and selling their product, they really do not give a flying wotsits at what costs...

RTL, this is an upsetting link, but it has more information about HIV+ mothers breastfeeding and the ramifications of giving formula

How bleak and tragic your post is Those poor women, those poor babies.

What a sad link.

I've met Prof Coovadia - he's amazing.
