please please excuse the ignorance

  1. when you boil your water and then let cool it in kettle 9as intructed everywhere) for approx half an hour...mine is stll pretty warm when I pour it into my avent bottles - say 70 degs...is that correct or should it be cooler?? worried re plastic being melted...

  2. are plastic bottles safe when vapour sterilising continously...worried

  3. formula actually smells pretty foul when I opened one warmed bottle...is that how it should be...how can LO like it? not really a mikly smell...

also why do they say leave water in kettle cooling for NO LONGER than 30 mins..surely boiled water stays sterile for some time longer than that??

I find that after 30 mins cooling is the best temperature for nicely dissolving the milk powder. The high temperature doesn't seem to be any problem, they are designed for it.

I'm using my avent bottles for the second time so they've now had almost 24 months of being steam sterilsed every day.

I'm not keen on the smell of formula but I sniffed a bottle of warmed up expressed breast milk once, just out of curiosity at a friends house and it didn't appeal either.

TBH Bumbly we didn't stick strictly to guidelines as found them toio difficult. So we would boil kettle, then put water into sterilised bottle in fridge to cool. I bought new bottles every few weeks and formula does smell bad but babies seem to love it. I'm not an expert and what I did might not be right but it worked for us and DS had no ill effects.

Nothing to do with sterility afaik, probably a hangover from making batches of feeds up when wtaer needed to eb hot to dissolve the powder before storing. Also you aren't likely to inadvertently reboil in that time. Yes plastic bottle are fine they can withstand dishwasher/boiling water/steam etc. Formula does smell foul !

bumbly · 10/08/2007 15:02

so your "cooled" water isnt actually "cool"?

bottles wont melt and are very safe. We have had the same ones since DS was born and he's now 16 months (changed teat obviously). We used to fill the kettle and leave to cool for 30- 60 mins (god knows where the no longer than 30 mins comes from?) We'd leave it until you could touch the outside of the kettle without burning your hand basically.

HTH

I believe that they say no longer than 30 mins as the milk powder itself is not sterlile and the idea is that the temperature of the water is still high enough to kill any bacteria.

Imake up a days worth of bottles at a time and sore them in the coldest part of the fridge once they have cooled down by being stood in cold water.

  1. the 'leave the boiled water to cool for no longer than 30 minutes' advice is from the new guidelines for making up bottles where the water is supposed to be over 70 degrees to kill the bacteria in the formula powder. It will not affect the bottles as they are designed to be sterilised by boiling in water or using a steam steriliser.

  2. The bottles are designed specifically to be steam sterilised

  3. formula does stink!!

I dont go by the guidelines, I put the boiled water into the bottles and leave them at room temperature and only add powder when the feed is required. DS takes them at room temperature so no heating is required.

bumbly · 10/08/2007 21:34

seona - can i ask how long do you store your sterile boiled water bottles for at room temp for use?

ie when do you use them by? 24 hours or more?

eg if you had one stored for a couple of days would you still use it to dissolve powder in?

formula smell horrid sma smells worse than c&g by the way
it is what lo is used to
its about the riight temp after being left that long
and steam sterilising, you should replace teats regulary (when damaged) an check bottles for signs of wear too!
dont worry

Seona1973 · 10/08/2007 22:36

bumbly, I use the boiled water within 24 hours. If I have leftover bottles of water after that time I would wash, re-sterilise and re-fill them.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 10/08/2007 22:38

I do it the "old fashioned" way - steam sterilised, make up bottles - after 24hrs throw away any that haven't been used (haha) and 're-stock'.

Lizzzombie · 10/08/2007 22:42

I put freshly boiled water into my sterilised bottles. Then warm them up when I need to. I'm not leaving my kettle full of cooling water. What if I need a coffee?
Agree - raw formula smells and feels gross. 'cooked' formula just smells like baby sick to me now!
