Just wondering what formula brand is best these days? It was Aptamil when DD was a baby but iv heard a couple of bad things about it over the last year or so! Theres also the new Aptamil Profutura version is that any good 🤔

Let me know what you think xx

There is no 'best'. Its all regulated so all the required nutrients are in every milk. It's whatever suits your baby and most expensive doesn't mean its any better than any other milk.

Have a look at the channel 4 documentary on formula. It is so strictly regulated all formula is required to contain set ingredients. Save your money and go for the cheapest. I think the documentary mentioned the Sainsbury's own brand being the best value.

I was given the advice to check which brand is stocked by the nearest 24 hour shop for when you have to send DP out to buy some in the middle of the night!

Flamingo84 · 30/08/2019 12:14

Agree with PP. it’s so highly regulated there’s little difference in basic formula.

I’m sure I read somewhere that Aptamil and Cow & Gate are from the same factory, just literally scooped into different tubs.

They go through so much of the stuff I’d pick a brand that’s a reasonable price and is stocked in your local supermarket. Nothing worse than running out and having to drive miles for a particular brand.

Aptamil & Cow & Gate are the same company. A lot of ex-employees suggest they are the same product. It wouldn’t surprise me. As a teen, I did a school placement in a local biscuit factory & I was astonished to learn that the biscuits are all the same. They just changed the packaging to Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Aldi etc 😯 in fact Waitrose premium cookies where the exact same as Aldi premium cookies. You can imagine the price difference!

Your basic Cow & Gate, Aptamil & SMA have everything in your baby could possibly need. No need for any of the fancy additions in my opinion. The supermarket branded ones are also identical.

The only reason we didn’t go for Aldi formula (identical ingredients to Aptamil) is that we found the little pre-made bottles of formula handy when out & about with no access to boiling water. Supermarket on brands don’t do them I don’t think..

Formula ingredients are strictly regulated. Buy the cheapest one - the rest is marketing.

If one of them found an ingredient that made an actual measurable difference then they'd all have it.

AloeVeraLynn · 30/08/2019 13:24

All the same. Just marketed a different people. Save your money.

Toadsrevisited · 30/08/2019 13:28

Save more money and breastfeed if you can

crustycrab · 30/08/2019 13:30

Toad congratulations on being the first Hmm there's always one.

Op - they're all the same

HJWT · 30/08/2019 13:39

Thanks everyone, With Aptamil I saw they changed the formula and parents were complaining it didn't dissolve properly?

Will see what they have in my local Tesco! You are all right we have 2 Tesco's near by but nothing else so probably best to check there 😁

@Toadsrevisited I will be breastfeeding hopefully I did with DD but always best to have a tub incase it's desperately needed in the middle of the night 😄

I was wooed the first time with Aptamil but with DD I have been using Hipp Organic - it’s one of the cheaper ones.

Agree with the others they’re all the same

DungeonDweller · 05/09/2019 20:03

Assuming you're in the UK. Just get any, personally we went for the one brand we could get at either of the local shops easily. One shop often doesn't have the tubs in but the other does. So pragmatic choice really.

My wife and I have tried only 2 formula brands with our newborn, Aptamil and Kendamil. What I can say is that as soon as we moved him to Aptamil he's been on a continuous cycle of feeding and very lengthy burping (an hour at a time with him very unhappy/uncomfortable throughout). This is now even to the extent of having to burp him when breastfeeding which we definitely did not have to do before introducing Aptamil into his diet. This pattern had continued even 24 hours after his last feed on Aptamil! This is in contrast to Kendamil where we only had to burp him when he's had formula and then only for about 20 min at which point he'd fall off into a deep sleep.

While the vitamin and mineral composition of the formulas may all be the same, it's worthy of note that Aptamil does not contain milk it only contains milk derivatives. Kendamil and HIPP both have milk as their primary ingredient. That may be true for other brands as well, but we have yet to check.

Timeturnerplease · 01/11/2021 11:38

Yes the nutrients are the same, but there are variations in ingredients between different brands - for example, some brands contain no palm oil or fish oil, some are made from full cream milk and some are made from skimmed milk with additional oils added for fat.

With my first she finally stopped screaming when we put her on HiPP, after being investigated for CMPA. However, three years later and her sister became very constipated on HiPP so we switched her to Kendamil and she’s been fab since.

Whatever you do, don’t buy a big stockpile in case you have to change.

For the hospital, you’re best off starting with a brand that does a starter kit of ready made bottles and then moving on from there like we did.
