Help feeding our 4MO

Hey,

We are in dire need of help, basically our baby girl struggles to latch on to anything.

Basically our daughter has an extremely poor latch, she dribbles on some teats, not so on others. But whatever teat shes on there's always a clicking sound when she feeds, also coughs, splutters, gags and cries on the bottle. We have tried pretty much everything, from MAM, Dr Browns to NUK, Minbie and everything else in between.

She had severe colic where she would cry from 1 hour, sometimes upto 8 hours being the longest.

Fortunately she don't do that now, but is still never really all that happy.

She also had a tongue tie which was divided successfully, and personally don't think this made much difference as she's not been able to latch before or after this division.

She has chronic wind, and screams in pain to the point where she almost loses her voice at times, she does this every night, sometimes it actually isn't to bad and gets straight sleep, other times it can take upto 4 or 5 hours to get to sleep

We thought she had a cows milk allergy, so we've tried priscription formulas.

We got prescribed ranitidine in suspected silent reflux, and also added carobel into the formula to thicken, no change.

To try and combat the wind we..

Told to try probiotics, no change
Infacol, no change
Dentinox, no change
colief, no change
colactase, no change

Health Visitor, Several GPs, Several visits to Leicester Royal Paeds all say there's nothing wrong with her, and also seen a cranial osteopath all resulted in no change.

We as parents are sure its down to her latch or lack of, even though she has been taking full feeds of 5 to 6oz and is a healthy weight and gaining still.

Every suck or every other suck she clicks and takes in air, thus we think results in stomach acid and chronic trapped wind which takes her hours to pass and when she does it's like a full grown adult Male passing wind.

Although this week or so I think shes now began to associate the bottle with all her pain and is starting to not want feed, so now we are trying syringe feeding her to eliminate the air/suck and she doesn't like that, cup and straw feeding which also she doesn't like. We have fast ran out of ideas, and its effecting our relationship to the point of wanting to leave each other as everyday is a massive challenge with suffering from post natal depression making everything so much more fun.

We didn't expect this and so far been has been an awful journey into parent hood. And after 5 years and 4 IVF cycles which had resulted in highs and unimaginable lows.

We need help. Please

Thank you

Has her tongue tie reattached? I seem to remember that can happen and we had to do daily exercises to try and prevent it.

Sounds like you are having a really difficult time, sorry to hear!

Could there be more to the tongue tie? I understand they sometimes reattach after division, or some are harder to diagnose. It might be worth getting a second opinion. Is there a baby cafe or feeding support group near you? The consultants there will be more experienced with issues from a feeding perspective, and may spot something the other doctors haven't

Didn't want to read and run.. No helpful advice I'm afraid, but we went through the same (tongue tie/clicking/wind) with DD and also tried everything and anything.

Health professionals all said nothing was wrong and it would change in time... as it happened (frustratingly) it did and she 'mastered' feeding effectively around 6 months.

I remember thinking it'd never get better, she's 8 months now and apart from sleep deprivation things are much easier! You'll get through this (I remember wanting to punch anyone who said that to me (sorry!)). Thanks

Could you have the tongue tie reassessed? My little girl had hers cut at 7 days old, no improvement despite people saying it was successful. Went back and scar tissue had formed around the cut so it was actually more restricted than initially! After cutting a second time it was much better. Still not perfect and often her latch is shallow and lazy, but better than it was!

Tongue tie can cause colic and reflux symptoms so definitely getting it reassessed!

Another vote for getting the tt reassessed OP.

What did the cranial osteopath say? My daughter had severe reflux and dairy intolerance, so we went through something similar. Her trapped wind was horrendous and she would scream constantly and wake every 40 mins. We had strong reflux medication and neocate and used mam bottles once I dropped bfing. However one trip to the cranial osteopath really help relieve the pre existing trapped wind and she showed me ways to help wind her more effectively. Also she looked at her jaw and did something to help the alignment. Afterwards it really was so much better. Might be worth another visit? But if you're sure it's the latch, then I would suggest booking a private appointment with a paediatrician and make them look at her tongue tie again. Good luck - I know it's hard. 4 months was a serious low point for us and I think I really hated my husband at times out of exhaustion and frustration at the situation. But you will get past it.

Try taking her to a cranial osteopath - we had great success with it
