the cows' milk has been boiled/lysed /dried to buggery so is broken down and easier to digest than plain pasteurised cows' milk - which, you're quite right, isn't suitable as a main drink till 1yo.

LOL! Can you see why some of us folk object to "closest to breastmilk" claims......?

What follow on did your DH buy? - Most follow on is actually cheaper than the first milks and it can also be on special offer. I do use follow on for the above reasons - ds hasnt been constipated and I have saved a few quid. He will move to cows milk at 1 year, I wouldnt use formula longer than that.

hunkermunker · 02/08/2007 21:23

Naily, there are issues with soya formula too - especially for boys, I think? Don't know masses about it. Someone will though!

not sure if this has already been mentioned but i saw in boots today a notice near the formula that they are not allowed to do promotions on their milk anymore. is this because they are not allowed to because of the government trying to increase the bf rates etc?

MrsBadger · 02/08/2007 21:34

they're not allowed to put it on special offer or mark it down, on the grounds that this is 'promoting formula' ie same deal as advertising it.

clutteredup · 02/08/2007 21:44

seona it was aptamil, dh bought it from tesco and it was a pond more. last time i used sma and i can't remember but did think it was cheaper. dd has been absolutely fine on it but if there's no real reason i'll stick to the cheapeer one. i definitly used milk after one, so much cheaper and easier.

they are not allowed to promote first milks (i.e. the ones up to 6 months) They are allowed promotions on milks from 6 months i.e. follow on, growing up milk, etc (I bought some C&G follow on today and it had a saving of £1.20 on its normal price)

Re price - if you stay within the brand the follow on is normally cheaper than the first milk i.e. aptamil is £6.96 (in most shops)for number 1 (normal) and 2 (hungry) but follow on is only £6.47.

Gawd knows why Boots have suddenly decided to show they know what the law is....it's been around since 1995!

Hello,
My baby is 8.5 m old. I ebf my baby till 6 months. Started with solids after that and introduced follow on stage 2 milk formula when my baby was nearly 7m complete. I recently came to know that follow on milk is not needed , infant formula can be given till age 1. I bought follow on as it was available in store n i thought it is more suited to age 6+ months n above. I started as 30ml per day gradually increasing to 150 to 180 per feed. It has been nearly 2 months now that my baby is taking follow on milk and it seems to have suited well.
Never had any issues like constipation , just vomiting 2 to 3 times.
I am getting worried and nervous about follow on milk.

  1. Does follow on milk cause any harm?
2.my baby takes up 300 to 360 ml per day ( 2 feeds total) . Since it is less than 500 ml I have been giving vit A,c,D daily as recommended. Can vitamins be given with follow on milk?
  1. My baby has almost stopped bf during day time, however I bf my baby before bed, and almost 3 times during night as she wakes up and demands.
  2. I understand that nutritional value of stage 1 and 2 formula is same , iron and calcium content is a bit more in stage 2,and vit A, D values are slightly higher. Will this cause any harm?
5 . Should I start with stage 1 or continue with follow on type? I am very much confused and worried. Please help and advise.
