Breast milk not freezable?!

Ahhhhh! I'm going away for a night in a (local) hotel tomorrow. My DS is four months old and I'm so looking forward to a night off with DH. My mum is babysitting.

I've been expressing and freezing milk, but I've just got it out to defrost and it's smelly! Slightly smells of baby sick 🤢. I froze it within 24/48 hours of being expressed. Is that normal? Will it smell stronger than fresh or has it gone off?? Why would my milk not freeze?

Thank you everyone. I'm going to express this morning to get as much as I can and DH is going to get some formula. Hopefully he'll take it as I'm desperate for a night out!
Tomorrow I'll start experimenting and seeing how long it keeps for

Scald the milk after expressing like the Kellymom website says.

@QueenEnid @legalseagull so what do you do pump put it in the fridge then when you pump again add it to what is in the fridge and freeze within 24 hours of the first pump? Sorry if it came across as rude I am genuinely interested haha!

I really need to do my research on pumping as DH will have to have baby for 2 hours a week when he is here so might need milk 😆

I pump, pour it in to a bag and put in the fridge. That's usually half a bag and then next time I pump I just pour in to the same bag. Although given my problem I might now do smaller amounts.

@HJWT I bought a 1l jug from Ikea and poured all of it into that. Because I was exclusively expressing I knew i used around 1/2-1 jug a day. I had 2 on the go so I knew the milk was never more than 2 days old. Anything excess I used to freeze

Raisinghumans · 18/07/2019 20:06

If you mixed them while they were a different temperature this can happen. I was told if I'm mixing expressed meant to store in the fridge til at the same temperature before mixing

legalseagull · 19/07/2019 08:01

That's a good point @Raisinghumans

Thankfully DS is drinking the milk so I'm currently enjoying a lie in at a very posh hotel with DH whilst my mum has successfully done the night shift. Must admit, I miss my boy though! First nights away are hard!

I collapsed and ended up blue lighted to hospital when my baby was 4 weeks old. I had some frozen breast milk but family and friends who rallied around gave her whatever formula they could find too and when i got back two days later resumed breastfeeding for another year with no problems.

I was diligent in only breastfeeding with my other babies and would not ever have thought to introduce formula but obviously had no choice in this case and we were all fine.

coragreta · 19/07/2019 08:28

Mine was the same and I'm sure trying to feed my baby gross breast milk is why she became a massive bottle refuser. With my second I just used the odd bottle of formula. It was fine.

That is good news. Enjoy the peace. X
