what to do. He was born vaginally at 7.15 am so very sleepy, . Put him on the breast 3 times since then and he has latched on fine.. I can't remember whether I am supposed to wake him up during the night to put him on... or what. Had a few problems with DS1 on the breastfeeding front ( lost too much weight) so anxious to do the right thing...any thoughts ladies, thanks so much.

Can't help on the feeding but was that a birth announcement???

Congratulations!

skirmish · 28/07/2007 21:39

congratulations

i didn't wake mine, just waited until he woke and was restless, but he wasn't really interested - maybe feed him 3 times in the first 24-30 hours.

I'm sure someone who knows what they are talking about will be along soon

Lostmykeys · 28/07/2007 21:39

He'll probably sleep a lot tonight as I'm sure they fdo for the first night or two before they really get going. Oh! and congrats of course! Plus you must be mad logging onto MN when you now have your handsful and probably v. knackered after labour and no doubt a long day. Go with the flow, and if he already latches on, I expect he will continue. Good luck and sleep tight!

CarGirl · 28/07/2007 21:40

mine were shattered and slept loads for the first 24-36 hours tbh

scattyspice · 28/07/2007 21:40

Well done girl!!

MorocconOil · 28/07/2007 21:40

Congratulations on the birth of your DS georgiebs !

I think he'll let you know when he wants a feed. Try to get some rest and try not to worry!

puppydavies · 28/07/2007 21:41

congrats i asked the mw if i should be waking dd2 and she said not to. i got 2 blissful nights of 7 hours sleep, helped me to recover from a long birth and saw me through the following weeks of nowhere near as much sleep nicely.

coleyboy · 28/07/2007 21:42

I believe that you should encourage very little ones to feed every couple of hours (even if you need to wake them up). If they don't feed enough, they then don't have the energy to feed again and it becomes a vicious cirle (iyswim). Frequent feeding will also help build up your supply.

I am not a professional though, so maybe someone else is around to advise??

georgiebs · 28/07/2007 21:42

Thanks ladies... will take your advice. Would feel rather strange waking him up but I do remember CMW with DS1 saying I had shouldn't had left him to sleep through the first night.. anyway. Will ignore that. Will write up birth story on Announcements while I remember it!! xx

Oh, and meant to say. Congratulations!!

It looks like everyone disagrees with me

NeverEndingPileOfLaundry · 28/07/2007 21:44

Firstly, Congratulations!

My DD was born early in the morning - she fed straight away, and then had a looooooong sleep to get over it all. After that, she was up all night feeding on and off, so it may happen to you?

Someone here will be able to help more than me, but if you have any concerns you need to talk to a midwive, who will hopefully be helpful......

Penpen · 28/07/2007 21:45

Congrats!!! My ds2 now 6 months old and still bf.

The advice now is to feed on demand! So I would get some well deserved rest and sleep as much as possible and feed when baby demands it. I have never woken either of mine to bf!

You're lucky if he wants to sleep through the night!

If you want to help your milk along and baby is sleeping alot you could always express to stimulate your milk supply.

I am no midwife just a mum and speaking from experience!!!

Good luck x x

Penpen · 28/07/2007 21:50

p.s. my ds2 born at midnight, latched on straight away, slept until next am, fed on and off that day and slept alot, then fed every hour day and night for the next 2 - 3 days until my milk came in! But they're all different!!! x x

moljam · 28/07/2007 21:52

congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!

gr8kids · 28/07/2007 21:53

Absolutely agree, feed on demand when your babe asks for it. My dd1 i fed for 23months, dd2 6months and my ds now 17wks I am still feeding and will hopefully still be feeding him till I feel its time to stop. Go get some rest and enjoy him. Good luck
