My lovely friend's baby is 4 weeks old. Last week she (lovely friend) had a lump in her breast, it was sore and she felt poorly, so she was given antibiotics. This week, no surprise, she thinks she has thrush (2 sore breasts would seem to agree...), and so it's back to the GP tomorrow.
I know she is tired, and I know that it must be pretty tempting to give up breastfeeding at a time like this, but I also know that she is the sort of person who, if she can get the problems sorted out, will love to have breastfed her baby. I'm going to give her a call tomorrow and suspect that the thrush is going to be the main topic of conversation. I was lucky enough to feed my baby with no problems, so my texts: "chin up!" and "you're doing really well!" don't quite cut it.
Can anyone with experience advise? Is it possible to keep breastfeeding through thrush or will the baby get infected? Are thrush treatments safe for babies? Is there anything that will relieve the pain until the infection is sorted? I've looked on Kellymom, but all I found was a recommendation for a refined sugar free diet (when everyone knows that cake is the life blood of the breastfeeding mother...). Please tell me some constructive tips so that I don't just spend my time coming out wth platitudes...
