Cow & Gate v Aldi Mamia Powder Milk?

Hi all,

Is there any difference between these 2 formulas?

I was planning on going with the Aldi stuff as I've seen really good reviews however in the Aldi by us you have to take an empty tin to the till and get the staff to get if for you... now in that fast paced Aldi environment im not sure i want to be regularly holding up the queues :)

I see that the cow and gate stuff is only £1 more in all supermarkets and they also do the ready made stuff, so just wondering for the sake of ease if its better to go with that instead?

Any suggestions?

Hi planty87, we have used C&G for both of our children (4 years old and 9 months). I was tempted to try the Aldi brand but my baby will only be on formula for another 3 months so not sure if it's worth it. My brother used Aptamil but has switched to the Aldi brand and he doesn't think there is a difference at all.

There was a programme about the different brands of formula and whether there is any difference between them recently (can't remember name of the programme, sorry!). The conclusion was that the baby formula market is very strictly regulated so all formulas have to contain a minimum standard of nutrients. I think the expert on that show said that they are all basically the same. The difference in price is just marketing!

They also said that the follow on milk (6 months plus) is essentially the same as formula for 0-6 months but contains a bit more iron (?). The industry created a follow on milk because they were not allowed to openly advertise the 0-6 months formula.

Good luck with whatever you choose to go with!

£1 adds up over time. The formula industry in the UK is extremely highly regulated, so if you're getting the stage 1 stuff it really doesn't matter which brand, none of them is better than another.

It also seems to be a curiously British idea that you must pick a brand and be 100% loyal to it. I had DS2 in Germany, mixed fed starting in hospital and he'd had about four different brands of formula by the time he was a week old. Nothing terrible happened, so we stuck to the same practice of buying whichever we could find and not necessarily sticking to the same brand for powdered and ready made either (most brands in Germany don't seem to do ready made, I only found a couple which ever did). I think he ended up trying about six or seven different formulas, not because he didn't get on with them, they were all fine, but just because of availability.
