breastfeeding & periods

I have been feeding dd for 11 months now and haven't had any periods - which is a good thing! - however, I'm wondering when they are likely to come back. Every time I shout at dh I am convinced it is PMT (rather than me just being a moody old grub!). Anyway, what I wanted to know is when everyone's came back (after finishing feeding completely, or earlier?) and also if, when it does come, is it the mother of all periods and completely hideous???? And whether it is okay to use tampax while bf (sorry, this may be obvious, but am not sure!). Thanks.

Mine came back around 9-10 months, I too breastfed. My dh cousins came back around the same time so could be sometime soon. I used tampax, didnt even think about it.

Mine have just started again (very light) now that my ds is 8 months old. I have cut down to feeding him twice a day, and giving him a bottle the rest of the time, which must have prompted it. And I was the same as Joe1 went straight back to using tampax without giving it a thought.

Mine returned when ds 17 weeks and exclusively bf - they're straight back into their normal pattern - I used tampons without a second thought.

There's other people's histories on this/related subject on current thread of "breastfeeding as a contraceptive" - you might want to check there aswell Ellaroo.

Thanks for all your replies - I've also read the other threads you told me about and will enjoy it while it lasts (their absence that is).
