How do I know my DS is getting enough

My little fella is nearly 10 months old and has always been clockwork with feeds. I have breastfed from day one and he has always been fairly speedy in his feeding but I am now a bit concerned that he is too speedy. He was weaned at 20 weeks as his weight platoed and he scoffed it right down. Now he is on 3 bf a day and does not seem to take on that much - is that normal or should then be taking 21oz like when formula fed? he is not aggitated between feeds at all and does not tend to have water unless it is a hot day as I figure this will make him less interested in the boob if he is not particularly thirsty. Just thought someone might have some advice for me?

You know he is getting enough because he looks healthy and happy. Formula and breast milk completely different things.

I think that sounds just perfect. My ds only 23m but it seems like a long time ago! If he is on 3 meals and 3 bf I don't think you can go far wrong. I would have thought if you gave him too much solid he would lose interest so I think you've got a good pattern there. I reckon he's just such a pro bfeeder he can get it down in half the time!

I think you're doing really well- well done!

As they get older they get much more efficient at breast-feeding; chances are he's taking plenty, but just getting it faster than he was a few months ago.

If he's gaining weight and is generally happy, I wouldn't think there was too much amiss.

How much food does he have a day in addition to his milk? If he's eating a lot, he may just not be as hungry for his milk.

He eats a shed load of food - does not touch the sides - MOst people gasp at the plate that he consumes!!! I figure that if he wants the food he wants the food if he does not then would turn head away etc. He is not a big baby, bit thunder thighed but rest fine. Very active (hence the problem of wriggling while feeding and not being that interested I think!!)

Am I right in thinking that the hind milk is not that important at this stage anyway since he gets loads of calories from solids so the fore milk is the most important as it stops dehydration and contains all the development requirements?

Moguie - your ds is fine. Can I explain a bit about foremilk and hindmilk? The breasts do not make 2 diff. sorts of milk - it's just that the more watery components of the milk trickle down to the front of the breast between feeds, and the fattier milk comes with the let down.

You do not need to worry about this, or mistrust your body or your baby in the way things are engineered.

Your baby will be a super-skilled breastfeeder and you will be a super-skilled let-downer, too I doubt very much that he is getting 'foremilk' alone....he will take what he needs in terms of calories, nutrition and fluid unless you deliberately restrict him, which it doesn't seem as if you are doing.

Comparing breastmilk to formula is highly misleading - the idea that babies of this age 'should' have 21 oz of formula is no more than notional anyway - why would you want to judge what he is having compared to a notional figure of something that is less physiologically-suited to him?
