is he breastfed?

NAB3 · 20/07/2007 21:29

Babies tummies are so small that they do feed all the time. Green poo in BF babies is okay, I think. (Its been just over a year since I BF).

shazzaronnie · 20/07/2007 21:29

yep sure is

Perfectly normal. The more they feed the more milk you produce for them.

Supply and demand.

shazzaronnie · 20/07/2007 21:31

i thought green poo means over fed??

OP posts:
moondog · 20/07/2007 21:31

No.You can't overfeed breastfed babies.
poo comes in all sorts of colours.
Don't fret about it.

TheArmadillo · 20/07/2007 21:31

If he is bfd it could be because they are not latching on properly and therefore not feeding properly.

I had the same problem with ds when he was newborn.

Baby demands and you supply.
Oh, I miss breast feeding.

oliveoil · 20/07/2007 21:32

feed, sleep, poo, cry

repeat for about 6 weeks

then they eventually smile and all is ok

shazzaronnie · 20/07/2007 21:32

just seems like he's never satisfied as always cryin when awake don't remember this with my dd?

OP posts:
singyswife · 20/07/2007 21:33

I know I may get shot down in flames here but does he have a dummy. He may just be comfort sucking. My dd did this.

moondog · 20/07/2007 21:33

No,some do that,that's all.
Doesn't mean your milk is not up to scratch. It's perfect for him. Tailor made.

oliveoil · 20/07/2007 21:34

does he feed from both sides?

I can't remember at what age but dd1 seemed to settle more if she had a longer feed from both breasts

but tbh 3 weeks is so young, they do seem to feed constantly at this age

it can be hard

shazzaronnie · 20/07/2007 21:38

si it all quite normal for this 4 how long 6 weeks ?

OP posts:
moondog · 20/07/2007 21:41

From memory settles down a bit at about 6 weeks.

You're doing a great job Shazza.

be proud of yourself.

oliveoil · 20/07/2007 21:41

iirc (and mine are now nearly 5 and nearly 3) dd1 was still feeding every 2 hours or so at 2 months

dd2 same I think

not in the night, maybe 3 or 4 hour stretch then

then at about 3 months it got into a kind of routine, 3-4 hours, longer at night

dd1 had a dummy, dd2 refused one

vnmum · 20/07/2007 21:45

green poo in a breastfed baby can indicate that they are just getting foremilk and not enough hind milk which would also explain the constant hunger as hes not getting the fat and calories. they do have a growth spurt around 2-3 weeks where they will increase feeds to increase supply. the breast needs stimulating and emptying fully to increase supply and it can take till approx 6 weeks for supply to be fully established. if you are not in pain when he feeds then sounds like your latch is ok.
does he seem to take short feeds, if so the next time put him back on ther same breast to try and encourage him to get the hindmilk, then swap breasts the next feed. he could have got into the habit of snacking. if he falls asleep on the breast quickly then try and wake him gently so he will start feeding properly agin and get the hindmilk.

a dummy at this stage could interfere with the supply and demand cycle of getting your supply established. i know its hard but if you can just go with the flow abit things do settle down.

have you thought of having him in a sling then he will feel close to you and will be able to feed while you get on with things, you may not feel as tied.

also definately ring a helpline to speak to a qualified counsellor

shazzaronnie · 20/07/2007 22:34

he does have short feeds and falls asleep on me but can't get him to stay on 1 breast long enough to get hind milk ??

OP posts:
crokky · 20/07/2007 22:41

Put him back on the same breast when he wakes up so he can get the hind milk. Mine fed constantly (literally - boob in mouth whole day!!).

FrayedKnot · 20/07/2007 22:46

Sounds quite normal to me. DS didnt do anything except feed & sleep for the first 5 weeks, which I think must mean when he wasn;t sleeping, he was feeding

About 5 weeks he started to be awake for short periods and NOT need to be attached to me.

shazzaronnie · 20/07/2007 22:50

but its so hard with a 1 year old to i thought he'd go 3 hours each feed?

OP posts:
kiskidee · 21/07/2007 04:57

he's too young to go 3 hrs between feeds. have you tried carrying him in a sling when not feeding? it will keep you hands free for the 1yo and also give him snuggles if he is after that rather than just feeds. you can also feed hands-free in a sling.

if you are interested in a handmade one that is good (will send wearing instructions too), CAT me.

I remember this stage well with DS... I would be lucky if I had 10 minutes per day to get anything done! All I can say is try to enjoy this precious time with your newborn - it won't last for more than a few more weeks. I tried to take DD out more (parks, soft play centre's, grandparents etc) so she didn't feel left out & I could sit & watch her play whilst nursing DS.
