G.P Advised Me To Give Up B/F :-(

Ds1 is nearly 8 months. I have never been a big girl and was very underweight before having children but with each baby have kept some weight. (5 kids) Before ds1 I was 8st. Put on 2 stone during pg but am now down to 7.5st and still losing. Have had blood tests inc thyroid and all clear. Ds1 feeds every 2-3hrs day and night and gp says the best way to stop losing is to stop b/f I don't want to but am looking pretty ill with it now
I eat tons, carbs, protien, fats ect... I eat 3 large meals a day with a snack in between each meal.
I do burn a lot off with 5 kids and b/f but am having on average 2500-3000 calories a day which is pretty high.

What now??

am remembering a 'tales of the unexpected' about royal jelly .. buzzzzzzzz

can you maybe cut down the bfs? .. is he weaned? maybe just cut back to morning and night-time feeds and give him drinks in cups through the day .. would that help?

HedTwigg · 20/07/2007 14:39

do you add extra oil / butter / fats to your food? (saw this on a weaning thread)

francagoestohollywood · 20/07/2007 14:42

missed that twigg, what happened???

HedTwigg · 20/07/2007 14:44

beekeeper was drinking gallons of royal jelly .. then they had a baby and the baby wouldn't eat .. so he slipped it some royal jelly .. final scene he had hair in weird places and was talking with lots of sibilant sssssszzzzz at the endssssszz of hissszzz wordszzz and you saw the baby stare at you in an 'I'm partly-bee' manner

CarGirl · 20/07/2007 14:44

I think you can just take tablets for tape worms - worth doing just to rule out?

magnolia1 · 20/07/2007 14:45

Yep add butter to everything. I don't want to cut the b/f really. I like feeding on demand and he is a bit of a snacker

OP posts:
magnolia1 · 20/07/2007 14:45

Ok now you have put me off Royal Jelly

Can you get him to stop feeding during the night so you get more sleep?

I have to say I once dropped down to 6.5 stone, was still eating etc but I think my metabolisom just went a bit crazy for a while? Also the stress of worrying about it may be enough to affect your weight?

magnolia1 · 20/07/2007 16:44

Oh I wish I could get him to actualy sleep in the night Its a pain coz with 4 other kids the best way to keep the house quiet is to feed him.
It probably is my metabolism, any way to slow it down??

Sorry to hear this Magnolia (and know from bitter experience that 'not feeding at night' isn't as easy as it sounds!). I'd go back for a second opinion. Do you take a general multivitamin (you can get some for new/bf mums)? Might help. I expect a lot of it is running after 5 kids (I've only the one and I'm knackered) plus the no-sleep thing does affect weight I find.

ib · 20/07/2007 16:51

Can you try snacking on nuts every time he bfs? They're healthy, high calorie, and if you eat whenever he does you are more likely to be able to up the calorie intake longer term.

SlightlyMadSpider · 20/07/2007 16:53

CAn you eat nuts when bf (re allergy etc?)?

magnolia1 · 20/07/2007 16:58

I snack on oat biscuitts (made with butter!!) all day. Don't want to do to much nut eating while b/f

You can get special high calorie food additive from the pharmacist called MaxiJoule which adds loads of calories without taste. Also making milkshakes with full fat milk and ice cream is a way to get a lot of calories in very easily.

magnolia1 · 20/07/2007 17:00

Can I get it on prescription?? Money is tight and that kind of stuff is usually pretty expensive.

OP posts:
cmotdibbler · 20/07/2007 17:03

You can definatly - just ask the GP what they would prescribe for someone who needed the extra calories and couldn't get them as part of their normal diet. There are high calorie drinks on prescription too (like Complan)so ask about those too.
Avacado is a great high energy food too.

ib · 20/07/2007 17:19

I thought nuts were fine unless your ds specifically reacts...I hope so as I can't eat dairy (ds is allergic) so need the calcium! Anyone have any links to stuff on nuts in bf and allergies?
(sorry to highjack)

GP is not God.
If you want to stop,stop.
If you don't don't.
Simple as that.

Personally I think it is good to not be carrying excess weight about.Enough heifers out there.

Wags · 20/07/2007 17:52

Gosh, I am a heifer in Moondogs words so never been a problem, but I have never envied people who want to gain weight as it must be the hardest thing to do. Porridge for breakfast, make it too thick with full fat milk then stir LOADS of cream into it. Could you snack on cake rather than biscuits, would that be more calorific, nice victoria cake with buttercream filling. Homemade flapjack, very heavy on the butter and syrup. Makes even me feel a bit sick thinking of it all. My Dad has a high calorie drink which he gets prescribed from the Dr. It can't taste too bad else he certainly wouldn't touch it. Good luck, would be sad for you to give up BF when you are not ready to.

magnolia1 · 21/07/2007 09:32

I would like to be a bit heavier as now my clothes are getting to big
Will ask the doc about high calorie suplements. Not goign to give up b/f though

OP posts:
duvet · 21/07/2007 14:44

Yeah good on you - how does he know for sure that giving up b/f will sort it anyway, that would be horrible if you gave up and it didnt make any difference. My metabolism changed after having kids I b/f both mine ate normally, I have a good appetite certainly not a 'girly' appetite in fact I hate salads and love carbs! I'm not as u/weight as you but I think if your healthy in all other aspects - don't stress just eat well as you are doing.
