11week old on bottle strike

My 11wk old looks to be going on bottle strike! She’s always been fussy since day one. She been exclusively bottle formula fed since day 3 and she struggles to take more than 2oz! She takes 3oz on a good day. Occasionally she wows is with the odd 4 ounce bottle. But then goes straight back to 2oz. She is slowly dropping percentiles. This is no where near enough she should be drinking! Now she’s starting to refuse a bottle completely!! Argh it’s stressing me out!

Have you tried a faster test?

dementedpixie · 21/05/2019 21:03

Teat*

dantiasmith · 21/05/2019 21:55

She’s been on faster teats since 2 weeks old which helped at the time , we’ve tried other bottles, other types of teats.

She isn’t sick and always winds. Usually happily takes 2 then winds but refuses the bottle after words, and is every now and then crying at normal feed time but refusing bottle completely

maybe try another formula

Has she been checked for a tongue tie? Severe tongue tied can make it hard for babies to feed and they get tired quickly. Might be worth ruling it out.

snowone · 21/05/2019 22:26

Don't wind her so quickly. I saw a feeding specialist who told me off for winding my DD when she wasn't ready. She now pretty much drinks the full bottle before we wind her

littleducks · 21/05/2019 22:27

What does your HV say? Maybe ask if she needs as assessment with infant feeding team or SLT (depends what is set up in your area) if its affecting her weight and growth

dantiasmith · 22/05/2019 07:11

She’s been checked for tongue tie and lip tie many times. By midwife, health visitor and GP at 6/8 week check.
I don’t intentionally go to wind her at 2oz that’s when she starts to push the bottle out and kick off. HV won’t do anything til she’s crossed 2 percentiles.... which I think surely is too late

A friend's baby was only diagnosed with tongue tie very late and others had missed it. I'm not sure how the system works but I'd go to the GP and push for an assessment with the teams littleducks mentioned. And dropping down the percentiles is a red flag whichever percentile the baby is on.

Samind · 22/05/2019 09:07

Silent reflux? Mine used to gag at the bottle and push bottles away but it is ended up being part or cow's milk protein intolerance so they prescribed her nutramigen and she's doing really well now.

I'm sorry you're having this trouble. Can be a very stressful time!

dantiasmith · 22/05/2019 09:39

Thanks! Sure is stressful she should be have 4/5 oz each feed but she’s only having 2 or refusing it! It’s just mad she is so content the rest of the time and isn’t sick or gassy. She’s such a happy baby. Got a GP appointment later this morning. Xx

My DS1 has a very obvious tongue tie at birth so when DS2 was born I specifically asked the midwife and drs to check for one and was assured he didn't have one.

A week later following a readmission for jaundice, a 12% weightloss and real difficulty establishing feeding I got a private midwife from the Association of Tongue Tie Practitioners out to assess him. He had a severe posterior tongue tie that would have made it impossible for him to breastfeed and which made bottle feeding difficult and tiring for him.

Tongue tie was divided that day. He immediately latched onto the breast and starting gaining weight. We were able to stop bottle top ups immediately, he became more alert and contented. It was genuinely an almost immediate improvement.

Posterior tongue ties are hard to spot and often missed so it is worth pushing for a proper specialist to do an assessment. It might not be that of course but it would explain a lot of your difficulty.

Otherwise the allergy/reflux angle might be worth perusing?

Katia2511 · 22/05/2019 09:58

I have the exact same problem, only my baby is 18 weeks. I started with breastfeeding and he kept dropping on the weight chart, we moved on to bottles to check exactly how much he was taking, and he used to stop at about 60 mls and just refuse to take more. If I pushed him to take more, he was sick. Now at 18 weeks, he drinks about 90-100 mls.
HV was very unhelpful, she said it might be because I am giving him the dummy for comfort too much... well I want him to feed for hunger, not comfort!!!
Anyway we saw the GP twice and I pushed for a pediatrician referral (we have private insurance so that helped...) and I am seeing someone next week, I can keep you updated if you want to.
Sorry you are in this situation but it's nice that I am not the only one! 🤗

dantiasmith · 22/05/2019 10:39

Katia2511 I would really appreciate that! I hope your referral goes well! It’s such a heart ache worrying about them. I will get GP to discuss tongue tie more also!! Thanks everyone

Hi OP, I went to see the pediatrician, he checked his tummy, legs etc., and he said baby is absolutely fine! He said not all babies are the same (yes, I know that!) and he will probably enjoy his food more than his milk. At 18 weeks, I started giving him some porridge in the morning and he loves it and he started going up on the weight chart now.
Sorry I cannot help more x

Katia2511 · 31/05/2019 08:48

The pediatrician checked for tongue tie too and he said he's fine! I guess some babies just don't enjoy their milk Hmm
