Babies are born with a fat reserve that covers the first few days before the milk comes in with a vengeance.

Let him suck away and all will be well.

Promise!

MegaLegilimens · 20/07/2007 10:22

Oh Tutter - I hate to think of you lying there all worried and no one helping you. Make them, make them!
DS4 was like the tutterling, had a cs with him, couldn't move and he just wanted boob, boob, boob all the time the nurse had forgotten to switch my drip on and I was completely dehydrated plus ds4 had a tongue tie and was having probs latching on. Nightmare.

When can you go home? You'll get home, relax a bit and your milk will com ein and he'll be fine.

Hi Tutter,

Congrats on your new baby! I am a breastfeeding counsellor and wanted to offer some reassurance.

Firstly, you don't need to expect too much in the way of soggy nappies in the first few days. Although colostrum is packed full of antibody goodness you don't really produce much more than a teaspoon or so at a time - a day-old baby can only hold this much in their tummy at one go. At three days stomach capacity is still only up to about one fluid oz max so you're not going to be getting the heavy nappies of a two year old.

Your milk will probably come in between about days 3-5. Putting your baby to the breast in the first few days helps them to get practised at lacthing on while your breast is still soft - it's more tricky to latch onto a full breast - and reduces the chances of you becoming over-engorged when the milk does come in.

When your milk comes in, put your baby to the breast AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE to minimise engorgment and related probs like mastitis. If your breast is so full that your baby is finding it hard to get a good mouthful then you can hand express a tiny bit off first just to soften the area around your nipple and make it easier for your baby to latch on.

There isn't actually any evidence that what you drink effects the amount of milk you produce - drink when you're thristy, eat when you're hungry (or looking for an excuse for an extra slice of cake) is the best advice I can give.

As it's your second I'm sure you know all the basics of positioning and attachment - tummy to mummy, nose to nipple etc - I can't emphasis enough how important it is though to get these basics right asap.

So - in summary - fret ye not tutter. Just bed down with your baby and have them at the breast as much as poss - I know this seems to be the answer to pretty much ANY breastfeeding problem you come accross, but it really is the best thing you can do.

Hope it all goes well for you tutter - will watch this thread in case you need any more support xxxxx

Tutter, put a tissue in the nappy, then you can spot if there is even a little bit of wee. Nappies tend to whisk it away so you aren't aware of it. You are doing brilliantly - keep it up!

tiktok · 21/07/2007 20:03

Good news, Tutter, and about the complics. afterwards.

Nil by mouth will not make any diff to your milk - neither its quality nor its supply, btw - so you will be up and running with bf in no time

Tutter · 21/07/2007 20:35

oh that's interesting tiktok

does wed count as day zero then? (was born 10am)

if so, we're only day 3 now, so hopefully we may see something tomorrow?

OP posts:

Tutter - I think your baby would be classified as day 4 now, and milk will come in v. soon. With the retained placenta, one might expect a later arrival of milk, so day 4-5 (as opposed to 3-4) would not be unexpected.

Hope you continue to feel good!
