Washing off Daktarin/miconazole before a feed

Hello! I've been prescribed miconazole/ Daktarin cream for thrush and 5 week old DD also has been prescribed Ny-something out other. (It's too dark to read the label...)

I know I need to wash the cream off my nipples between feeds but does anyone know the best way of doing this? Water alone doesn't seem to cut it but soap and water is starting to be a bit drying, which I can't imagine is helpful. I'm terrified that I'll leave some on and hurt her mouth though.

Just thought I'd see if one of you has experience of this. Thanks in advance!

I'm pretty sure you can get a version of Daktarin that's for oral thrush too so wouldn't need to be washed off? Maybe have a look for that?

You have my sympathy, thrush really isn’t nice is it?! I just used to wipe the area with a damp flannel. I figured it can’t be actually harmful as otherwise it wouldn’t be prescribed, but more that you don’t want your nipples plastered in the stuff when baby latches on. Good luck!

You don't need to wash off daktarin before breastfeeding. Unfortunately the oral version of daktarin for your nipples will not work but will probably be more effective than the nystatin for the baby.

Nystatin is given to everyone first with oral thrush and those under 4 months. Daktarin for oral thrush can only be given when prescribed by the gp. If the thrush doesn't go, return to the Dr and ask for daktarin but make sure you get the full dose and either put it on a spoon or the back of your washed hand and work it so it's smoother then treat the affected areas (a 1ml syringe is helpful in getting the correct dose).

My understanding was that the nipple version can irritate mucous membranes, hence the advice to wipe out off. I'll check which version I've got and if is with changing though.

@HDready that's really helpful to know that a damp flannel was enough for you and your LO. Thrush really is the worst. I had no idea it could be this intensely painful.

Oral daktarin isn't prescribed for babies under 4 months as it's a choking risk.

I used a flannel, I think it was actually the daktarin which was making my nipples sore rather than the washing. Thrush sucks, my dd had it at 14 days old and it took about 4 weeks for it to finally go.

@ChaosMoon thrush really is horrible. But once it was clear (and baby’s tongue tie had been cut) feeding was so much better. If you had told me back then I would still be willingly feeding at 10 months I would laughed (or more realistically cried) in your face.

HDready we had a tongue tie snipped last week too. It's making a difference already, though slower than I'd have liked. Probably due to the thrush, which I now realise could take a month to go. 😟

JeantheHipster 14 days send cruelly young to have thrush. I thought 5 weeks was bad enough.

I've just been using water and a flannel, or even a water wipes as they're gentle. She seems ok, thank goodness.

Much better thank you @HDready. DD is clear but I'm still using the cream on me until I know for sure it's all gone. The worst bit now is putting it on after feeds when we're out and about. I have no qualms feeding in public but rubbing cream on them after is a bit much!

Her latch is fantastic now though. ☺️
