HELP! Contradicting Advice For Formula Feeding

VixenAndCub · 29/04/2019 18:40

I had my baby boy a week ago, and he's doing fantastic aside from a touch of constipation. I'm formula feeding so I was told this could happen.

Now I'm getting contradicting advice on storing milk. Some are saying I can make up bottles from boiling water (naturally) and store in the fridge STRAIGHT AWAY, whereas others are saying to leave them out for half an hour to cool THEN STORE THEM and they'll keep for 24 hours in the fridge.

Please refrain from sarcastic comments, I'm a first time Mum and never made formula up before, I just want to know which method is best.

Who is the they that are telling you?

Following the instructions on the tin is safest.

The NHS advice is to make up each bottle fresh every time you need one. But if you can't do that then you can keep the bottle in the fridge for up to 24 hours but you should make it with freshly boiled water than flash cool it (put in an ice bath/run under cold water) before putting in the fridge. Don't leave it to cool by itself or put it in the fridge hot. Check the NHS choices website as they have lots of information about making up bottles. Congratulations on your new arrival

The NHS Choices website should give guidance. I believe the current advice is that each bottle is made as needed - so not stored at all. You boil the kettle, let it cool a bit and then make the feed with water that is about 70degrees. It is a bit if a faff though.

Congratulations!

The current advice is to make each bottle fresh as you need it.

To do this we boil the kettle, put in X amount of boiling water, add powder to hot water to sterilise, shake to dissolve. Then we top it up with Y amount of chilled, boiled water (we keep a glass flask of boiled water in the fridge) to make it a drinkable temperature.

Trial and error means that we know that we need to add 1floz more cold water than hot for the right temperature, so a 7oz bottle will be 3 hot and 4 cold.

It sounds like a faff but it's far quicker than waiting for a chilled bottle to warm up, and actually quicker than one of the perfect prep machines (friend and I had a race!)

Have a look at a Tommee Tippee perfect prep machine they are brilliant
