3 month old with milk allergy??

My 12 week old is constantly getting stomach issues, he was originally on cow and gate and constantly had upset stomachs, often smelly and green in colour and with mucus present, so following the HV's advice switched him to SMA milk. Since doing this not a lot has changed, and we decided to take him to the doctors as it seems to me to be a milk allergy. (As I have one myself)
I suggested this to the doctor and he said that it's too soon for him to be diagnosed with one at such a young age, and could try colief drops if I really wanted to. We tried them and they helped a little, but it's still happening.

We really don't know where to go from here, does anyone have a similar experience or advice?
Do I switch him to lactose free milk anyway to see? As I'm worried about doing so if that isn't the issue.
Thanks in advance

A lactose free milk won't help, you need to push and push hard for a specialist referral

Ps we had a cmpa but didn't pick it up until 6 months, I though I was just a crap mum! I also bf thus formula use was limited

Referral to a dietician is the best advice tbh. We have a five year old who had a milk protein allergy and battled till 12wks before getting the referral. It was 12wks of hell, knowing something was very clearly wrong, and trying and failing every ‘solution’ suggested in that time.

Currently 6wks with second child and have managed to be able to fast track the referral. Although has helped by having DS1 with the condition, having the dietician contacts and knowing the subject matter well.

We are on medicated milk, Nutramigen. Not out of the woods yet however, as problems haven’t yet settled. Babies with allergies tend to be more colicky, which is just no fun at all.

I bf so I could cut out dairy, but I do know you can buy formula where the cows milk protein has been broken down to help it be digested more easily. I think the first stage one is Aptamil pepti 1. It's a bit of a slog being diagnosed if it is CMPA but there's lots of online advice and Facebook groups that might be helpful. Maybe if you can try a formula and his symptoms go then you can get better gp support? My HV was hugely helpful by the way, but we still didn't get a diagnosis until about 5 months. X

My son is 9 weeks old. At 5 weeks we thought that there had to be more to it as he was so grumbly and not sleeping properly, diarrhoea, soooo much wind. My doc said he was just being a "normal" baby. I knew that was bol@&cks. I switched him to lactofree milk and stopped breastfeeding and within 2 feeds he was a different child. A different has asked me to keep going with it just to check it's not an immature digestive system (I went to him to try and get the formula prescribed as it isn't cheap), he's been on it a month now. I got a referral to a dietician in 2 weeks from the HV too. He may not be lactose intolerant and it might be something else but I can't deny the amazing change in him since I swapped, he sleeps, is happier, his poos are more solid and his stomach isn't as grumbly which means his wind is so much less.

My son was on a dairy free formula (not lactose free, very different) from around three months due to a suspected CMPA. Keep going back to the doctors, I was repeatedly fobbed off until my son became extremely poorly and then people started listening. He trialled several prescription formulas until we found the one that worked for him.

Thank you everyone! My doctors reasoning was that it was also 'normal because milk is still new to him', I think I'll try see a different doctor and trial one of the suggested milks in the meantime. Thankfully he seems fine in himself other than the questionable nappies

Have a look at the first steps nutrition website for info about formula x
