Baby gaviscon

Hi all, after some advice!

DD is 16 weeks and suffering with silent reflux. Been to HV and GP and prescribed infant gaviscon but neither were clear about when or how much to give.

She's on 6oz bottles (sometimes 7). Instructions on the box say to give 2 sachets for every 4oz of feed- so should I be using both sachets? Also do I give it at every feed? Have tried to get in touch with HV today but she's been out of office and no one else could help apparently! Any advice much appreciated! Thank you x

It's been a long time since we last used Gaviscon, but I think we just used one sachet per bottle, even as DS got bigger and took more feed. I remember the instructions were v unclear, so I did some googling at the time - I think it was a bit of a trial and error type approach. I was always a bit wary of giving him loads because of all the scare stories about constipation (although we never had that problem).
Try one sachet per bottle and see how your DD gets on. For us the results were pretty instant (it was like a miracle!!).

@Wavingwhiledrowning thanks for your reply! I put some in her bedtime bottle last night and it seemed to do the trick- first time she'd drained a bottle in days! Will try the one sachet, I too am a bit concerned about constipation! Hopefully will see an improvement soon. Just out of interest how long did you have to use the Gaviscon for? Thanks again x

No problem! I think we used it from around 12 weeks until he really got established with solids (so maybe around 5.5-6 months).
Re. Constipation... Our GP also prescribed Movicol if he ended up getting clogged up. Might be worth asking if you can get a prescription just in case.

@Wavingwhiledrowning perfect thanks so much! That's been really helpful- will speak to GP about laxatives and see where we go from there! X

Hi OP, at 6oz we stuck with 1 sachet, have to say worked a treat for us, straight away she was happier, we used it in every bottle, then down to every other bottle, then once day, started reducing at 9m old when she was eating more solids.
We didn't have an issue with constipation thankfully, had an episode at 5m old and we gave her prune puree, sorted :-)

I used to use one satchet per 6oz bottle.I always felt unsure too. I think this medicine is poorly packaged in these little satchets. Using 2 just seemed not right somehowConfused.
My son was fine with the one in his bottle although I understand we all different. We never had problems with constipation. We stopped needing it at around 7 months.

Long term gaviscon user here lol

I'd use three single sachets as a max dosage (one single per 2 oz) but if she's coping on one then do that. Never e er caused constipation in DS (who is still on it at 3.5 years) but I know it can.

If you're mixing it in the milk it makes it thicker too so should be easily to swallow and keep down.

Beware if you run out of prescription, lots of pharmacies can be a nightmare to buy it from

Agree with pp with regards to running out.
Absolute nightmare trying to get it at most pharmacies without a prescription.

Hi everyone!

Have just tried her with one sachet in a 6oz bottle and she drained it! Was a bit of a fight but she definitely seems much happier now so will keep at it with that! Before we tried gaviscon she was only taking 3-4oz every couple hours which clearly isn't enough! GP only gave us one box to try so will go back ask for a repeat! Thanks for all your advice Smile
