Lactose free or hypoallergenic formula?

My LO has always suffered from horrific trapped wind, so much so that we recently ended up at the OOH GP as he was in so much pain we were worried there was something more sinister going on. The dr there really listened to his history and queried whether we’d tried going dairy free. We wondered if he may have an dairy issue previously but was dismissed by our GP as he didn’t have enough symptoms. If he does, I would guess maybe an intolerance rather than allergy, as it seems to flare up periodically. Interestingly he has had a lot more formula than usual over past few days and I have been eating a lot more dairy than usual (he’s mixed fed). So I thought it might be worth a try to see if it helps. I’m unsure though if I need lactose free formula or hypoallergenic or something else? Can anyone advise? TIA.

Also does anyone know if you can buy any in premade bottles? We’ve never used powder so I don’t really want to add that as another issue into the mix. He doesn’t really drink enough to justify buying a tub.

Babies typically are cow's milk protein intolerant rather than lactose intolerant if there is an issue, so lactose free formula may not help. I think you need a prescription for the proper hydrolysed formula I'm afraid and it isn't very nice.

You should get a prescription from your gp for dairy free milks

A common one is aptimel pepti if it's an intolerance but if it's an allergy you'd need neocate which usually only paediatricians can prescribe as it's roughly £50 for a small tin

Also I'd consider switching bottles if your not already using them to dr browns

Tbh, if your baby is mostly breastfed cutting out dairy and using formula minimally is probably easier than getting the hypoallergenic formula - babies tend not to be very keen on it.

Thanks everyone.
@SoHotADragonRetired solely breast feeding him isn’t really an option sadly. I had huge supply problems and the mixed feeding stemmed originally from weight loss related top ups. Despite all the pumping, oats, fenugreek etc etc I’ve never been able to produce enough for him.
@Fraggle84 we’ve used Dr Browns in the past and he didn’t like them. MAM anti comic seem to work for him in terms of burping.

Lactose intolerance is very rare in babies and milk protein allergy is much more common. Definitely ask the GP for dairy free formula.

Have you tried gripe water too? Boots own is the most practical.

Fair enough birdy, and no judgement from me. Hope your little one is OK and you can get some of the formula from your GP.
