Sausages for toddler?

Gruffaloschild2019 · 24/03/2019 16:33

My 17 month old is first of all quite a fussy eater, so I spend a lot of time working out recipes and cook foods that she can happily eat. But I’m trying to cut corners now and introduce foods that are perhaps not that healthy but ok once in a while. I’m pg again and feeling very tired most of the time and I just don’t want to cook complicated meals twice a day.

Are sausages ok for a toddler? I know they are processed and quite high in salt but a good organic sausage once or twice a month wouldn’t hurt? My DH is not very keen on my idea.

I give my toddler sausages quite often. We buy ones that have a high meat content. I don't see why it's a problem?

Once or twice a month really isn’t an issue in the grand scheme of things. Just make sure they are cut like you would grapes, to minimise a choking risk.

LoisLittsLover · 24/03/2019 16:37

Dd would starve if she didn't eat sausage!!

Stayawayfromitsmouth · 24/03/2019 16:38

Ha ha. Dc2 will be weaned on those lottle cocktail sausages or dc1 cake....

Gruffaloschild2019 · 24/03/2019 16:40

Thanks everyone! I think they are ok too, just find the salt content a bit high.

Good point about cutting them like grapes.

Your DH isn't keen on giving a toddler sausages - literally the only savoury food a fussy toddler will reliably eat?! So how many toddler-friendly meal suggestions has he come up with?

Sausages are absolutely fine. Get good quality ones (high meat content etc) and cut them lengthways.

Jamhandprints · 24/03/2019 16:44

Of course they're fine. What does your DH want her to eat?

daphine2004 · 24/03/2019 16:45

@Gruffaloschild2019 my son was the same and I got a bit paranoid about salt and too much red meat. Like another poster I bought the mostly meat ones, but for he past few years I have only bought the Linda McCartney vegetarian sausages.

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 24/03/2019 16:55

I think at 17 months she can have up to 2g salt per day, look at how much per sausage in the ones you have in mind but they're probably fine if she isn't eating anything else with much salt in it.

Gruffaloschild2019 · 24/03/2019 16:59

DH thinks they are highly processed and high in salt. I personally am not a meat eater (DH followed suit) and we never have them in our fridge. But I want my DD to try everything and she can make her mind up when she is older.

Sorry for my ignorance but what would be a good meat content? Over 90%-95%?

My DS nearly choked on a sausage skin - so I used to remove the skins after cooking

golddustwomen · 24/03/2019 18:14

When my two were your dds age I used to buy skinless sausages and cut them in half. They used to take little bites. My youngest is 23 months now and have been buying sausages with the skin on for the past few weeks. They love them! They LOVE toad in the hole.

Nowthenforever2019 · 24/03/2019 18:20

My 9 month old absolutely loves linda maccartney sausages, and they are a bit softer to smush in their mouth.

Strawberry2017 · 24/03/2019 18:21

I get them from the butchers so I can justify them to myself 🤣

daphine2004 · 24/03/2019 19:08

Re percentage of meat, I’d say a minimum of 85% of. I thing else, but would prefer 95% or 97% - the Black Farmer or Debbie and Andrew are generally high meat content.

daphine2004 · 24/03/2019 19:08

*if nothing else.
