cleaning bottles in the dishwasher - is it safe?

my ds is 6 months old and i have been sticking his bottles and teats in the dishwasher and then rinsing them and putting them in the steriliser - is this bad for him? i just though that being cleaned at such a high temp would make them extra clean but my dad says there is salt in the dishwasher tablets so i should check that it won't cause ds any harm. any thoughts anyone?

People on this thread mention dishwashing their bottles and not sterilising them afterward so it must be fine, surely?

My sil did this and her two survived.....

Dishwashers do have salt in but they rinse after the wash cycle and they boil things just as efficiently as your steriliser so perfectly safe.
No need to rinse between wash and sterilising and if you're not going to sterilse after the dishwasher then you shouldn't rinse them as this will be introducing unsterile water to something that has in effect been boiled.

My midwife told me after birth of DS (now a VERY sturdy 2.5 yr old) that dishwasher was fine as temperature so high it effectively sterilises bottles.

Have done same with DD (now 4 months) and she's absolutely fine. Since she stuffs everything DS hands her straight into her mouth anyway, sterilising bottles seems a bit pointless!

But my dishwasher only washes at 45 degrees Celsius - surely a steriliser is at 100 degrees(boiling point of water and all that) - so that must be more effective?

Dishwashing alone is plenty. No need at all to dishwash AND sterilise. Hooray for dishwashers, the finest invention known to woman.

what about breast pumps? can we get away without sterlising them too?

Twiglett, doesn't water boil at 100 deg C though...?

Dishwashers are fine for bottles and teats though and no, you don't need to sterilise thm afterwards.

SoupDragon · 09/09/2004 17:01

Don't put them in at the same time as something tomatoey though!!
