Reflux and reintroducing food groups...

Hi all

My baby is on omeprazole for reflux. Paed also advised cutting out dairy, wheat, soya, eggs. I've done that for a month now and things much improved. Hard to know if improvement due to meds or diet change. Paed mentioned reintroducing each food group, waiting 2-3 days to see if any effect, then the next etc. So far I've reintroduced wheat and soya with no problems.

I know dairy - if anything - is most likely to cause an issue. How quickly after eating dairy might there be a reaction? How soon will I know? We've got a small bottle of ready made hipp organic formula (baby breastfed until now). If we give a tiny bit of that and there's a reaction/not a reaction, that'll give us the dairy verdict won't it? If there is a reaction, how quickly might it return to OK again, after we cut dairy/formula again?

Thank you.

Thanks for replying, I got confused and wasn’t sure if baby was a bit older and you were giving the foods directly Smile

Normally, when you’re advised to try dairy you give a tiny bit of something where the dairy has been baked. It’s an swell used system for reintroducing milk called the milk ladder.

I’ve not heard of a Paeditrician or Paediatric Dietician recommending going straight to formula before, you might want to check with them again that this is what they meant before doing it Smile

And to answer your question about recovery. If it is CMPA most people will start to feel a bit better after 2 to 3 days but it can take upto 2 weeks to get over having dairy.

My DD has a dairy allergy, her main symptom through me was reflux.

Has your baby ever had dairy directly before? If not, I wouldn't try them directly first - I'd try through you and breastmilk first. If a miniscule amount through you is enough to give them reflux, a large amount direct could make them really sick - DD got reflux through me, when she helped herself to a tiny lick of DH's ice cream she had explosive diarrhoea with completely undigested food for the next 10 days!

I'd do what you were recommended to do, which is try something from the top of the milk ladder (glass of milk, yoghurt). The only thing I'd do differently, is if you've not seen a reaction after 3 days - have another glass. Leave it 3 days again, if still no reaction have a glass a day for the next few days. If still no reaction, your clear. The reason you do it for more days is you can get something called build up - it can takea while for the effect to accumulate. If you want more expert advice, I'm on a Facebook group called Breastfeeding with CMPA and other Food Allergies - they are strict about giving advice in line with NICE recommendations where possible rather than allowing lots of conflicting suggestions.

With milk through me and reflux, DD has always been OK within a couple of days. However, there are people I know where it can take up to 6 weeks.
