Hello, I have 11 week old DD who is EBF. Which is going well, we are very lucky. However I find that when she has gone for a longer stretch without a feed (say more than 2 hours) she then gets so excited about having some milk, she latches on really strongly and gobbles away, but then my milk comes out with such force (or maybe just too rapidly) she can’t keep up and ends up sort of choking and it’s all running out of her mouth and she is coughing and spluttering. But the second she has cleared she is back on and does it again. She will do the same with a bottle. Absolutely down it, and it goes everywhere. Plus she then ends up sicking some up as she has over eaten. One thing I do note is that she isn’t distressed by any of it or crying. She just goes back in more more!

Does anyone have any tips to get her to calm/slow down. She sleeps well at night (touch wood) so don’t really want to wake her to feed. She is gaining weight well and following her centile perfectly so I think she is getting enough.

Thank you

Can you try a laid back feeding position? Ds does this and he just comes off for a moment while the milk spurts in his face and then goes back after a minute. They are more in control in that position.

I’m not sure any of this is unusual or a problem really, other than making a bit of mess or more challenging to feed in public. Babies love milk! Given she’s not distressed and coming back for more it all sounds normal. I have fast let down and my babies have gotten used to it.

Like pp said, laid back feeding can help, so the milk is working against gravity. Or, when you feel your let down coming, you could catch the first strong spray in a cloth or bottle for keeping, them latch her on when the flow has slowed a little.

Thank you both. Have tried laid back feeding with a Muslim tucked underneath which was quite helpful. Glad to know it’s normal.

My LO is exactly the same. Sorry no suggestions. I think it's just normal. Keep up the good work 😊
