Changed formula - how long to give it?

Hi everyone

So I started a thread a couple of weeks ago about potentially changing formula to help with DD’s constipation.

We ended up changing on Sunday from C&G to Hipp Organic. The good news is that it seems to have helped with the constipation. However, she has been a lot more sick than usual - immediately after bottles and sometimes an hour or 2 later. She also seems a bit fussier after her bottle, not as contended as she was previously - almost as if she is still hungry. She currently takes between 4 and 5 ounces, I don’t think that she is actually hungry for more as quite often she seems to be sucking the teat and will take a dummy instead and that will settle her.

Has anyone had this issue when changing formula? I’m just not sure whether it’s just her tummy getting used to it and it will settle so we should give it a bit longer or if we should change back. Any advice appreciated! Thanks

Forgot to add, the sickness doesn’t bother her whereas the constipation did by the third/fourth day. Just worry a bit about weight gain etc with all the vomiting (plus all the change of clothing required!)

I don't think there's any harm in carrying on with the Hipp but it might be worth trying a comfort milk when this one rubs out Smile

Oh that’s an idea, I might try that. Just feels like one issue gets resolved and another one comes along. I guess that is parenthood Grin

I have no experience of hipp but did use Aptimil Comfort for constipation and colic. I was advised that the comfort milk was slightly thicker and to use a larger teet to help her feed- could this be an issue with your choice of new milk???

SlowTango · 01/02/2019 14:24

Hmm I hadn’t thought of that. I’m not sure if the Hipp is thicker but it’s definitely less foamy which I thought would have been better for her tummy.

I wish I hadn’t changed it now but feel obliged to stick with it to see if it’s just her settling into it. She’s just not her usual happy self. Although maybe it’s a phase and unrelated to the milk. God it’s a minefield of overthinking. Can you tell she’s my first?! Grin

I've not long since had my second and often liken parenting to trial and error. I often feel like it's a case of "what happens if we..." "oh that didn't work. Let's try..."

Poor little babies. It's so hard and full of guess work until they can speak.

Best of luck!

You are right, totally trial and error. It’s just that I beat myself up over the errors haha.

I’m glad that others feel the same and I guess it’s hard to get advice because every baby is different. I’m so torn on whether to persevere with the new milk or give it up as a fail. Feel rotten that’s she either being sick or constipated, can’t seem to find the right balance

If she's still being sick I'd move onto something else tbh. Apart from anything else being sick is stressful and labour intensive for you.

Consider a Comfort milk- they're designed to relieve constipation. Our little girl was on it for about 4 months before we swapped back. Sometimes their guts have just not matured enough yet.
