Aldi mamia first milk

Hey.
Baby due in the next few weeks and I'm hoping to breast feed but my mum has said to get a formula milk in just incase. I was in Aldi today and saw the mamia first milk for £6.99!!! All the babies in my family have used aptamil so was just going to get that but would like to know more about the Aldi milk first

There are strict regulations round formula so they're all really similar.

If you compare ingredients on all the different formula tubs, they are basically the same! They have strict guidelines with formula. Go with whatever you think will be best for you and baby, babies aren't fussy about fancy labels! Hope everything goes well in the next few weeks!

We use mamia with our Ds2. We found it mixed better than aptimal and haven't had any issues. As a pp said, formula is so heavily regulated that they are all pretty much the same so just go for one that's easy to get hold of for you.

Checked the ingredients and is basically same as aptimil.

Someone told me it's made in the same factory as aptamil. Save the ££ and get it!

They do have some differences that can make a difference to whether a baby is ok in a formula
Sensitive babies do better on one with a higher whey to casein ratio. I think currently SMA first has the highest at 70/30
Some babies are sensitive to fish oil. HIPP organic contains dha/aa from non fish sources
Aptamil profutura is not suitable for egg sensitive babies

So whilst it is heavily regulated it’s worth looking at a comparison chart and switching if your baby seems to not suit a certain milk

I breastfed both children, but introduced a formula when I went back to work. I really don't like Aptimil and my baby certainly wasn't keen - it smells awful, sometimes goes very clumpy and we found it went stale quite quickly. After recommendations, we tried Hipp Organic and haven't looked back. Something reassuring about it being organic and a little more gentle.

Buy one you can buy locally to you. If Aldi is across the road - then grand, if you have to drive three miles to get to it - maybe have a think. We always seem to run out!

With formula make sure you pick a brand that you can easily get hold of close to home so if you need to pick some up urgently you can.

If you are just buying some to have as a back up, I would go for a couple of the big cartons of ready made milk. I used those in the first few days with mine.

We switched from Aptimil to Mamia, and find it fab, we switched when Aptimil changed their recipe and babies were getting ill. We still use the Aptimil ready made bottles when we're out and DS doesn't seem to notice - the recipe on the ready made bottles never changed.

Do Aldi still sell this? Also how long can you expect the tub of formula to last with a newborn

As others have said, it's all pretty much the same. However it's not very good advice from you DM although probably very well intentioned.

If you do need formula after the birth, most places have 24 hour supermarkets these days.

If you think that you want to be prepared in case BFing isn't working out for you, then there are other things you could do like putting the BFing Helplibes numbers in your phone and calling them as soon as you can and finding out where your local BFing Support Groups are and going to them while you are still pg if you can.

All the evidence says that if you have formula in the house, you are much more likely to give up on BFing.

We’re using it for our daughter, have had no problems, so much cheaper! Over the course of the year it’ll save us a fortune. I’d recommend it.

Please consider the language you use regarding BF carefully. Mums are already vilified enough if they dare not to breastfeed. Suggesting someone might ‘give up’ (this is the type of language you should reconsider) just because they have formula in the house is ridiculous. Your whole reply comes across as judgemental and patronising. This lack of support is much more likely to lead to women stopping breastfeeding than having a tin of formula. Do better. (And yes I do realise this is an old post but it still needed saying.)
