nipple feeder

My baby daughter likes to nipple feed. She is 11 weeks and doesn't want to get out of the habit. Spoke to various medical people (inc. counsellors) and learnt tricks to make her take more breast in but she gags and then slides down to nipple (canny girl). Of course it was very painful at the beginning and it's still painful, a bit less since my poor nipples got used to it but the throbbing pain at latching and afterwards is still very uncomfortable. Tried to get her interested in a bottle of formula (at least one to give some relief in the evening) in the early days and stopped when the milk supply was bigger and when I started again a few days again she made a huge fuss and didn't want the bottle unless forced, which wasn't that nice for us. I expressed my milk and she still wasn't happy. I have now dropped the idea of the bottle and I'm soldiering on. Any tips?

Nipple shields???

How are you holding her? She needs to be able to wriggle to get to nipple feed.

Do you swaddle for feeds? Put a pillow under her so she's at the right height, encourage let down before starting the feed so she gets it right off and doesn't get frustrated?

Sounds like you are doing wonderfully considering the problems - keep going - someone else will come along with some more tips soon!

Health visitors hate nipple shields but I ignored them and continues to BF till 6 months despite having cracked bloody nipples at 3 weeks. Nice!!!
Nipple shields are a great invention but the avent ones are too thick, the boots one are thinner and allow baby too feel closer to real booby.

Also lashings of lansinoh between feeds is good. £10 from mothercare or free on prescription from the doctors.

I would have given up if not for lansinoh and nipple shields. My nipples healed and became tough after 4 weeks on this regime and my dd never had a problem getting the milk through the shields.

She didn't like nipple shields, luckily I don't have cracked nipples and they are tougher now, but you get some pain afterwards.
