Cows milk protein allergy - the challenge

biancamelody · 04/01/2019 17:41

We found out my dd had a cows milk protein allergy at 3 weeks (she had blood in her poo) , she is now almost 7 and we have been told to start 'the challenge' where we add back in a scoop of normal formula and then up to 2 scoops the next day and keep adding until its the full bottle. Has anyone had any experience of this? Did it work?

Only 7 weeks? Who advised you to do the challenge?

Hi, the paediatric dietician who diagnosed her. She's been on the pepti 1 milk for over 4 weeks now. Do you have a different experience?

We were told to keep DS dairy and soya free and to try soya at 10 months (failed) and have to be admitted to hospital for milk trial at 16 months, he's been dairy free since 10 weeks. He was breastfed until 16 weeks then on puramino milk.
We're currently getting him onto almond milk (oat allergy too) at 13 months.

7 weeks seems very young to trial.

GP said my 7 month old had lactose intolerance and after 4 weeks we tried similar and did not work at all. At 11 months the dietian said not CMPI and she went dairy free. At 2.5 yrs old we are still struggling to get past stage 1 of the ladder and dietian said we probably won’t manage the whole ladder until she is about 5 yrs. But I do know other toddlers are very quickly outgrow it.

I would follow the advice but any sign of discomfort, loose or mocusy stools then stop. You could also do it more slowly if you wanted but that’s a personal decision.

How did you know that you LO's had an allergy or intolerance? My LG has suffered terribly since she was 10 days old with trapped wind, pooing and pretty much her little tummy in general. She seems uncomfortable most of the time, fists clenched, red face, knees up to her chest. She can pass wind up to 20 times just per 2oz of a bottle and yet will still appear uncomfortable. This means she's rarely settled or getting a proper sleep. Not only this but her poo has either been really stuck and she is going once a day but A LOT or it is after every feed and is just purely water and spraying out of her. I've spoke to doctors, HV, midwife and all seem very disinterested. I've recently put her into the lactose free milk and there has been a huge difference already. I had tried everything else, colief, infacol, gripe water, anti colic bottles, changed formula and nothing up until now had worked. Desperate for answers since doctors aren't interested and just want to know I'm doing the right thing for her

My 3mo does. Was told by GP to trial every 4 weeks. Nothing said about 1 scoop at a time though. Literally just give a normal feed.

She's mixed fed and so I cut out dairy too. She failed the challenge of formula the times we have tried and semi failed breastmilk. I slowly reintroduced dairy into my diet and she was fine. She doesn't get much milk from me though, hence the formula. When I expressed my milk having reintroduced dairy and gave her a bottle of it she had an awful reaction - crying lots, coughing, pooing 4 times in a row, lots of wind and unsettled for a couple of days after.

Have you joined any of the cmpa Facebook groups? They're a really good source.

Hi just to update we did the challenge, gradually building up scoop per scoop per day and my LG is now back on normal formula and actually doing a lot better than on the allergy milk where she had really bad wind and constipation. The main symptom of her allergy was blood in her poo and there has been none of that so fingers crossed she is back on normal milk for good
