I can't burp my baby

I've tried everything. I just can't manage to burp him properly.

He's got bad wind and is in pain.

I feel like I'm failing him. Does anyone have any tips on how to get him to burp?

Struggling... :(

Have you tried infacol and gripe water?

Livinglavidal0ca · 27/12/2018 19:59

Put him over your knee and rub his back, not pat. I found I had to burp for a lot longer than I originally imagined.

Lay him flat on his back, rub his belly.

@Soiree not tried either. Doc told me gripe water was proven not to work but not tried infacol... is it OTC?

Have you tried different positions? The 'tiger in the tree' one worked well for us. You lay them over your fore arm so their head is on the palm of your hand and their legs either side of your elbow and sway them gently up and down.

I hated burping! With dd2 I was slightly better at it. As well as patting on your lap and over your shoulder, try gently picking up so they are 'stood' on your lap and sitting them down again, or gently turning their upper torso side to side. This worked very well with dd2, it sort of wiggles the burp out of them!

Basically, you are trying to gently move air up and out.

I used to do what living did over your lap and rub not pat or lie on their back ans cycle his legs.

Does he actually need to burp? Ime if they don't burp easily then it might be some other issue.

Cynara · 27/12/2018 20:13

Lean him forward and tilted to his left.

There is a video that worked wonders for me. Hang on...

Try that.

^^ This, DD actually had reflux trying to burp her only got her more upset. Babies don't always need to burp and the upset could be something else.

We struggled with this too.
Google baby massage for wind.
Also try infacol.
Good luck. Wind comes up easier when they get a bit bigger!

My DD was the same, she would scream in pain and I'd burp her for around half an hour. Infacol made her scream bloody murder so I binned that. Tried dentinox which worked okay, tried gripe water and it's my saviour. It didn't make her burp but dispersed the bubbles in her tummy (she had so much gas I could hear the bubbles in her stomach). She now sleeps through :) Another one to try is colief but apparently that's a right pain if you are BF. Lots of tummy time helped, and raising her cot, keeping her upright for feeds. Also look for baby massage classes, they teach you tummy massages and that really helped. I know its easy to say but it gets so much better when they can confidently hold up their head and sit up. DD now gets her gas out herself mainly

My son had awful wind until around 6 months. He had gripe water in his bottles, infacol before each bottle and used the tiger hold a lot. We also used to sit him on our laps facing out, hold him across the chest with his arms resting over my arm and use the other arm to bring his feet up like a frog then rocked back and forwards. This worked wonders. (If you can picture what I mean?!?)

frogintheTyne · 27/12/2018 20:30

Do you have stairs?

healthvisitor gve me the tip to hold baby in burping postition ( as you would do) and walk up and down stairs with them.

Sometimes took a few walks up and down, but worked every time.

TheRhythmlessCarolMan · 28/12/2018 11:32

How old is your baby? I hate burping my DD too.

One thing that did help, sometimes:

Sit baby on your lap facing you then in a "stirring" motion, with baby's back straight so wind can escape, slowly rotate baby in a kind of cone shape, if that makes sense? Better to go clockwise apparently.

Basically the bottom is still and the head is making an outline of a circle.
