Chair for breastfeeding in nursery

RiskIt4Biscuit · 10/12/2018 10:52

I hope this is the right place to ask!

I am thinking of getting a chair for (breast)feeding in the nursery, and am looking for recommendations for a suitable one.

Would you say that it is worth getting a chair for the nursery?

Thanks!

We spent ££££ on a nursing chair, it could recline, it could rock and was fab. However I didn't actually use it that much. I'd say look for a nursing chair on eBay/marketplace.

Ikea Poang is super, cheap, and does a better job than a lot more expensive kit.

oh4forkssake · 10/12/2018 10:59

You won't use it.

You won't want to specifically go there to feed (you'll feed wherever you are) and at night-time for the first six months or so the baby will more likely be in your room and believe me when I tell you, you won't want to traipse to another room (even next door) to feed.

I bought a nursing chair but didn't use it for breastfeeding as I found the arms got in the way. It's a rocking chair so it gets used at bedtime now and DD is rocked while having her cup of milk and story. It's great because both me and DH can use it

silkpyjamasallday · 10/12/2018 11:02

They are overpriced for what they are, and are ugly as hell. Just get an armchair that you find comfortable that you like the look of, then it will be useful until your child is grown up. We never had one as we coslept and I fed sitting up or lying down in bed, I wasn't going to be getting out of bed every 20 minutes to feed in a chair, I would never have slept!

CrookedMe · 10/12/2018 11:03

I bought one and never used it; I much preferred going to the living room so I could watch tv or just look out of the window while feeding. It can be long and boring!

Don't spend a fortune until you see how it goes.

I didn’t BF but we had the ikea Poang in the nursery when we moved dd into her own room at 6 months.

Really handy for night time feeding or comforting cuddles if baby woke in the middle of the night, we wouldn’t have been without it.

It’s very cheap but still looks nice, the arm rests are the perfect height for nursing and holding baby, it’s easy to get out of without waking them and the bouncing motion is great. Would definitely recommend!

BabyMoonPie · 10/12/2018 11:04

I should have said - I fed DD in the lounge/our bed for 6 months so when she went in her own room where the chair was she was bigger and that's why the arms got in the way!

CountessVonBoobs · 10/12/2018 11:04

I had an IKEA Strandmon wing chair. It got lots of use, and between babies we moved it downstairs to the living room. It's an ideal armchair for feeding IMO and not super pricey. I couldn't stand the ugliness of most nursing chairs tbh.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 10/12/2018 11:11

We have an Ikea Poang. DD has been weaned for ages now (she's 3.5), but before she was, I used it for night feeds/comfort settling after she went into her own room. Even now, I love it - I sit in it for pre-bed stories, and night time cuddles if she wakes up. DH wants to get rid of it, but I keep resisting.

I think I'll be forced to concede when DD goes into a full size single rather than a toddler bed, as it just won't fit. But until then, it's staying!

I got one of the expensive glider ones for £15 on eBay and had it in our bedroom. I bf and do most of the night feeds in bed (baby is 7 months now) but I also used it early on a lot both day and night. The arms were handy when learning how to latch and the rocking would soothe baby to sleep. There are loads second hand and they’re a rip off new so I’d recommend that. The gliding/rocking made it much better than a normal chair.

anniehm · 10/12/2018 11:56

Wing armchair from charity shop is perfect, otherwise try eBay

PerfectPeony · 10/12/2018 12:02

IKEA poang’s are great if you decide to get one. Our nursery is too small but I would have liked to have something in there for when DD is older.

I’m way too lazy to sit in a chair to breastfeed though, I see it all the time in films etc. but can’t imagine sitting in a chair every few hours and leaving my warm comfy bed. Whenever she wakes up I just sit in bed to feed, or if I’m really tired I’ll feed on my side incase I fall asleep- one of the benefits of BF!

RiskIt4Biscuit · 10/12/2018 13:26

Thanks everyone, it's giving me some food for thought!

Baby will sleep in our room for the first 6 months, so I will feed in bed at night, and during the day, just feed where ever we are.

I have heard good things about Ikea Poang, so I will have a look at it - maybe it will just be nice to have a comfortable chair in the room, alternatively we can buy it later if/when it becomes something I really want or need.

Thanks again, I really appreciate it!

We have a poang in my daughter's bedroom - she's now 2.5. I've spent a million zillion hours in that chair! Really pleased with it and glad we didn't get a specific feeding one. It bounces with your movement so really great for helping them nod off or sleep in if your child won't let you leave the room.

llangennith · 10/12/2018 17:22

Another downside of those rocking nursing chairs is that they're very heavy

TheRhythmlessCarolMan · 28/12/2018 12:03

Never got one in the end. Glad I didn't. Invest in a good feeding cushion or two.

IgnoranceIsStrength · 28/12/2018 12:07

We got a hideous old granny recliner from British heart foundation for very cheap
Absolutely love it. Very comfy and when ds2 wakes in night now older is very helpful to be able to cuddle him in it. Also great as it is actually comfortable to read bedtime stories from. Couldn't live without but wow it is ugly!

PipsM · 29/12/2018 21:11

Again recommend the poang. We had in our room so I could use it when baby was small. Now he’s in his room it’s there too and is great for middle of the night feeds and settling baby to sleep. Sometimes there are bargains in marketplace/gumtree to be had. (We also bought the footstool which wasn’t needed and was a waste of money!)
