Feeding issues after tongue tie release.

My daughter who is five weeks old had her tongue tie release last night. Well the feeding was bad before today I can only describe the feeding as agony. She’s biting in clamping down on the nipple and I would say that the sucking is not very good. Is this normal for the first few days after tongue tie release. Any advice greatly received.

It’s normal for there to still be problems ... she hasn’t learnt yet how to suck properly, and 5 weeks is a long time to get used to her own technique. Most improve by 24 hours but some take longer. One of the common things is not sticking her tongue out enough so the latch is still shallow. Have you got any breastfeeding support in place?

My little one had tongue tie but luckily it was picked up a day after birth so was snipped at a week old. It took a few days of pain before it got better but is now much less painful. Hope things have improved for you.

Mine have both had tongue tie divisions at a week old and whilst I haven't experienced what you are describing I've always been told that they may be unsettled in the few days afterwards and might have sore mouths etc. It also didn't get better immediately for me with either, with one it took a week and the other several weeks for things to improve as they need to relearn their latch. I'd recommend going to as many face to face breastfeeding groups as you can to get hands on support to get baby latching as well as possible. Hope it gets better for you soon, one of the main reasons we won't have another is because I can't cope with establishing breastfeeding again! 😂

Hi, rather late reply but both my dds have had tongue tie divisions and I was told to expect feeding to get worse for 2-3 days before improving. Although it doesn’t improve for some. In both babies of mine I saw improvement but not as much as I hoped, and I still had to help them latch a lot more than others seemed to. My advice is just keep breaking the latch, again and again when it feels uncomfy, and be very on it about good positioning too.

Thanks everyone. Days later it’s still a struggle and it’s really effecting my mental state now. I dread each feed. I’m trying to switch over to bottles now but she’s so unsettled at night. She lives the comfort of the breast! Urghhhh! Who knew it would be this hard!!!!

Have you had any follow up appointments or face to face support? They were crucial with both mine to help us relearn a good latch. Hope it improves for you soon
