Oversupply making baby choke!

He's 11 days old and every time I breastfeed, whether it's during a let down or prior to, my baby behins to choke and it puts him off feeding.

I try and express beforehand but because I feed on demand it's often difficult to do it in time — when he's not crying for milk.

I've purchased the medela pump but it seems like the suction works awfully. It takes forever to get a bottle to 200 ml, when I could easily manually express 200 ml in under 10 minutes.

He also won't take the bottle. He did only once after a nice bath, where he was hungry and had no choice.

I'm extremely distressed. Please advise me on what to do.

Please don’t be distressed. He’s so littkexstill and Bfing is a new skill that you both have to learn, and you will Thanks

There’s some tips here on oversupply and forceful let down.

Have you managed to get to any Bfing Support groups yet?

And I really would recommend talking this through with a BFC this evening. Have you got the Bfing Helpline Numbers?

I second the breastfeeding support groups or the phone counsellors. They are an excellent place to start.

My wee boy is now 8 months old and we are still feeding. I had exactly the same issue as yourself OP and I would consistently leak on the opposite side as I was feeding. My let down was so forceful and it's awful to watch them splutter.

What helped me in the beginning( I promise it does get better....your body will regulate itself) was leaning back when feeding, not necessarily lying down....but mabye a 45 degree recline? We also fed on our sides....but I'll be honest, I found this easier when he was a bit bigger.

I also used a Hakka pump to express (take the edge off the engorgement) on the opposite as I was feeding for a while....

The beginning is so difficult....stick in there. And also good on you for seeking help. Xx

I had this, try feeding lying down, much easier for them and you to cope with lots of milk in their face 😁

Hi, I have a 12 week old and also breastfed my other son til he was 2.

With my new baby I've had massive over supply. It's caused me a lot of discomfort and my baby was choking a lot. It hasn't been a lot of fun but things are getting much better now . I got the following advice from health visitors and a breastfeeding group I went to:

  • Try the laid back feeding position (as previously mentoned), my little guy took to it quite well. It means gravity isn't working against you and making things worse. I used this for a while - It's not great for when you're out and about though.

Hand express into a towel before feeding to take the edge off. This really helps. Keep a towel or muslin handy to catch the excess when he begins choking - take him off and do a little hand expressing to get it under control.

Savoy cabbage leaves - this REALLY helps, I didn't belive it would but I was desperate. Put one in each side of your bra (not for too long, not more than 20 mins twice a day). It calms your breasts down a bit and certainly helped with my discomfort.

Good luck!
