Severe pain in one breast ... HELP

onlyonmumnet · 26/11/2018 03:04

I have had a sudden onset of quite severe pain in the breast. It is sore to the touch although not exactly hot and no red patches. Itssore even when my clothes touch it, my nipples seem okay.

I wonder if it's mastitis? It is agony to feed on that side. I mean toe curling, full on crying and sobbing agony. I am terrified it's mastitis as all treatment involves feeding. I honestly can't.

Feed on the other side for now. Can you get to the G.P tomorrow, antibiotics will start making you feel better by tomorrow night.

Can you have paracetamol & Ibroprufen?

Warm flannel may help & lay on opposite side.

Flowers Ive been there. Dont leave it.

Could be thrush. I had that and it was excruciating. Awful awful awful. See if you can google symptoms and if that matches? I read good advice on here about it. Good luck

onlyonmumnet · 26/11/2018 03:15

I wondered if thrush but it's only one boob. The description of the pain is closer to mastitis I think than thrush.

It's truly awful.

So do the antibiotics deal with the pain? I was worried I'd need to feed through it. I genuinely can't. I'm crying even at the thought of it.

I had mastitis twice before ds was diagnosed with tongue tie. Excruciating pain, you have my sympathy. Unfortunately I was told to feed through the pain to stop getting more engorged, what really helped me was when I spoke to a La Leche and I was advised to put baby down on a flat surface and feed him with me being on top if that makes sense (although I had a definite hard lump in my boob which this helped to clear) - really did help but you will definitely need antibiotics as mastitis can make you feel so unwell.

JeremyCorbynsCoat · 26/11/2018 08:09

Sounds like mastitis and even though you feel you can't it's important to keep feeding off the 'infected' breast. See your gp this morning x

onlyonmumnet · 26/11/2018 08:15

What do you do though if you quite literally can't. I really am not a wuss but it's far too sore. I can't. Will the antibiotics still clear it?

Does the dangle feeding help with the pain?

OP posts:
Almostthere15 · 26/11/2018 08:18

The antibiotics will start it feeling better pretty soon if it's mastitis. Warm compress it before feeding it helps loads and take painkillers. The "dangle method" baby on a flat surface will help too. My every sympathy. It's horrid, stay in bed

onlyonmumnet · 26/11/2018 08:19

But what if you can't feed? I'm so sorry to be so obtuse. I know this is the best thing but I just can't. The pain even when just touching my breast is too severe.

I also can't feel a lump just a very tender area?

OP posts:
LadyFuchsiaGroan · 26/11/2018 08:43

Where you feel the tender area try and position babies nose there when you are feeding, and I know the pain when feeding is unbearable but it is so important to keep feeding. When I dangle fed my baby it cleared the area where I had the lump and the relief was instant.

PoshPenny · 26/11/2018 08:48

Once you're on the antibiotics the pain will clear very quickly. 24 hours and it'll be like it never happened. I don't remember feeding from the affected breast because like you it was just too painful.

onlyonmumnet · 26/11/2018 09:02

Have a docs app this morning ... will work my way up to trying g to feed. Going for a hot shower. Thanks so much everyone.

Almostthere15 · 26/11/2018 10:06

Would expressing be easier? Maybe not but at least you can start and stop. My understanding is it's really important to drain the breast. I could never feel a lump either.
You'll be feeling better soon once the antibiotics kick in

onlyonmumnet · 26/11/2018 11:14

Have antibiotics! Doc said to try and get her to feed ASAP but could express until the antibiotics kicked in. Feeling a bit more hopeful.

OP posts:
onlyonmumnet · 26/11/2018 12:25

Okay so I feel very brave and have managed to express an oz and let her feed for five minutes on the affected side. She hasn't managed to clear the blockage but has pulled it out at least a bit.

I know this isn't ideal but please tell me it's better than nothing! 🙏🏻

When expressing or feeding massage the sore area towards the nipple. That will help to clear it out. I hope you feel better soon OP.

Frlrlrubert · 26/11/2018 17:50

Also hand expressing under a hot shower helped me.

onlyonmumnet · 26/11/2018 18:15

Thanks. Hoping antibiotics kick in soon. Still painful but have managed two feeds and some expressing ... fingers crossed it's enough!

LadyFuchsiaGroan · 26/11/2018 21:00

Hope your feeling better soon, feeding with the pain is the last thing you want to do but it really does help. Fingers crossed the antibiotics kick in quickly!

Ginmakesmecry · 26/11/2018 21:03

Try alternate hot and cold compresses and take regular ibuprofen if you can. Hope your feeling better soon

Almostthere15 · 27/11/2018 07:34

Well done. You're getting there! I hope you managed some rest

JeremyCorbynsCoat · 28/11/2018 08:11

How're you feeling now OP?

onlyonmumnet · 28/11/2018 10:46
