My DS is 3 weeks old today, in the day he is as quiet as a lamb but at night he seems to be getting colic...

Last night...
Last feed is at 10.30 and he takes about 90 to 100 ml goes off to sleep til 1.30 I get up and feed him and he then grizzles and moans until 5am. He does bring his knees up but not much and he stretched out long he isn’t crying like mad all the time more unsettled and whimpering in pain? Wakes up at 7.30am exact same thing.

I’ve burped him but he is a guzzler
I’ve been giving him Infacol since Monday
I’ve uped the dose to 2 droppers this weekend
I rub his back, cuddle, give him dummy

But strange thing is last couple of night he slept lovely so isn’t colic the same time every night? Is colic the causes by wind? Should I try the comfort formula? I’ve got some but was giving the infacol a chance. Thanks for reading I really could do with some mum advice x

Congratulations on your baby boy! Sorry to hear he's having a rough time, and therefore you too. Things will get better!

Regarding the possibility of colic, it sounds like something isn't quite right but perhaps not as clear cut as colic. When my boy had it he would start screaming in pain at 7pm and not stop until 10 or 11pm, every night. We watched the clock tick down with dread. My DH and I would take 1 hour shifts to hold him as he screamed. Turns out he was allergic to cows milk and therefore the formula we were giving him.

It could be trapped wind if he's bringing his knees up. Some babies are a bugger to wind and always have more, no matter how well you burp them. Does he fart a lot too or arch his back?

Newborns are generally more active for food at night. Does he drain his bottle and keep sucking for more once it's gone? He could be unsettled if he's still hungry?

It can't hurt to try the comfort formula. It could make a world of difference. Depending on the type they often have a reduced lactose content which makes them easier to digest. You can also get 'Colief' drops from the chemist to add to milk which do the same job.

One last thought, is he comfortable at night? As in warm enough or cool enough for the temperature of the room? My son is nearly 2 but still gets whingy if he gets chilly at night.

Sorry one other thing, and perhaps the most important, I forgot to say it sounds like you're doing a great job and are very attentive to his needs Smile Flowers

DD would scream from 6-9pm with colic each night and would bring her knees up to her chest in pain. It does sound like something is up but I would say colic at this point.

With DD, I switched to MAM bottles and Comfort formula and she was better within a day.

Yes, anti colic bottles are a good idea if you havent already got them. We also used the MAM bottles and they were really good at greatly reducing the amount of air baby sucked down.

Comfort formula can be quite thick and that sometimes means you need to go up to the next teat size so baby can drink it easier. Not always, but something to bear in mind. It may even say it on the side of the tub (from memory)?

Thank you so much for you replies, last night was better he settled with 40 mins after each feed and I was able to get a bit of sleep in between. I’m still so unsure about colic it’s really not at a set time it’s after feeding. I’m going to try colief today, I’ve got mam bottles but didn’t realise u needed a bigger teat so I had better make sure I get a couple before I try just in case. Just hate seeing him upset he really is such a dear little baby x

We've been having the same issue here with our 5wo, grumping through the night, crying and whimpering, and legs going like mad all through the night. Bought 2 Mam anti colic bottles yesterday and she slept much better last night, so I'm hoping we are on to a winner there! Infacol didn't make any difference, winding never seems to get up the majority of the gas. Good luck!

Good suggestions above. Ours had colic and a bit of constipation. We changed to comfort milk fir formula (he also got pumped breast milk). Also used anti colic bottles and infacol. What really helped was burping him better. I did a baby massage class but you can just look it up on you tube. Try making bicycle legs to get the wind out at every nappy change and rubbing his tummy in a clockwise direction.

Have you checked it’s not reflux?

With ours colic started at 5.00pm Till 7.30 ish pretty much daily for a good 6 weeks or so. Luckily it stopped quite quickly.
