Arla big milk v whole milk

Hi all you yummy mummies!

Since my son came off formula I put him straight on arla big milk as it had the vitamins etc in it. I've been struggling to get hold of it though as they only do it at one supermarket in my area and not at any of my local ones! I think I'm going to have to just give him whole milk - is this a bad move? Will he missing out on essential vitamins? It's not even a money thing just convenience!

Thanks
Alex

Normal milk is fine. Big Milk is a marketing ploy.

I wouldn’t say it’s a marketing ploy it contains some vitamins that cows milk doesn’t but normal cows milk is fine also.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/11/2018 09:26

Just give him regular full fat milk. Children should be given a vitamin supplement anyway, according to the NHS.

I agree with Shelley, it just sounds like a marketing ploy.

I’ve bought it when it’s on special so I’m not pretending to be any less gullible then anyone else, but when a mum is checking if it’s ok for her child to have bog standard milk instead of a brand of milk, then yes I call that a marketing ploy.

I have just read my initial comments again and I don’t think I have explained myself very well. When I said I didn’t think it was a marketing ploy I meant in the sense that it is not a lie that Big Milk contains more vitamins than normal cows milk, but do toddlers NEED this milk? Absolutely not. Normal cows milk alongside a balanced diet is absolutely fine so in that sense I understand why you are saying it’s a marketing ploy. We choose to buy it in this household just because we like it.

I’m sorry if I came across as a douche in my first comments, very tired mum here. Blush

No Just discussion. And yes I’m not saying people shouldn’t buy it, only that they shouldn’t feel they need to buy it, and that actually your child’s not going to be better or worse for either type of milk.

harrisonsmum1 · 19/11/2018 07:55

Totally agree. Smile

AlexandriaFlynn · 28/11/2018 19:17

I agree that giving cows milk rather than follow on milk is the best thing to do.

Just as a flip side to the marketing ploy argument, I have to give my son Alpro soya follow on milk as he's allergic to dairy. I do agree that it's marketed in a way that would lead you to believe it's superior to cows milk (it's not) but it's a great alternative when your choices are limited due to allergies Smile

We used to buy this then switched to normal whole milk and just added the free vitamin drops from our baby clinic.
