Help! Breastfeeding and colicky baby

My son in 5 weeks old and it's been such an awful month. From a week old he seemed miserable most of the time, crying and often screaming for no apparent reason. I was told it's normal, or maybe colic.

Then I noticed he seemed in pain with trapped wind, and was straining. He also started doing massive diahorrea-like explosive stools that would go up his back. He grunts and groans and sounds congested.
I knew something was wrong.

We'd had a rocky start with breastfeeding (couldnt get him to latch) but I though nipple shields were working well. But from arpind 2 weeks onwards he started needinf food CONSTANTLY. And I mean all the time. I tried a dummy at 4 weeks but he rarely took it. His weight gain is superb and he's 95th percentile so I'm at a loss.

Yesterday I was told he's tongue tied. We're going to get that sorted, but could that really have had such an impact on him and his temperament, and cause the diahorrea and trapped wind?? I was told by a paediatrician that he probably has a cow's milk protein allergy but I have up dairy soya and wheat a fortnight ago and no change. He cries almost all the time, he seems angry and in pain almost all the time he's awake, and I'm starting to be so miserable about it - it's heart breaking.

I did wonder about lactose overload but not sure as I don't feel I have oversupply... my milk does leak loads but doesn't spray. Also i use nipple shields and he has a tongue tie so ocersupply doesnt seem to fit? Whats wrong with him and how can i make him happier? Please help!!

Sounds similar to my baby and the health visitor suggested silent reflux. He has medication but we haven’t seen any improvement yet :( He’s 7 weeks how and we have good days and bad. The evenings are the worst.

It could well be the tongue tie. Do his symptoms sound anything like this?

woolster · 15/11/2018 19:02

Sounds like it could definitely be the tongue tie. I’ve had babies with both, but 2 weeks elimination was easily enough time to see a difference with CMPA. Have you looked up analytical armadillo? Really interesting expert blogger and practitioner in this area. One of my babies was gaining really good weight so they were very reluctant to cut the tongue tie, but feeding was so much easier and for longer after it was cut. Good luck! Keep persisting and you will find a solution. I think it took me 9 weeks with baby 1 to discover CMPA and 7 weeks to get tongue tie snipped with baby 2.

Sounds exactly like my experience with my DD. She only had her tongue tie diagnosed at 6 months but she was just as you describe around that age and I strongly believe the TT caused most of her problems (or at least exacerbated them). Try and get it fixed and then see how you get on.

Hope it gets better soon. I had a brutal 4 months with my DD and wish I could have had TT diagnosed sooner Thanks

Just to add, my first had tongue tie but good weight gain and no nipple damage and the tt wasn’t picked up until much, much later.

Sounds exactly like my daughters CMPA also.

Have you tried Infacol or Colief?

surreygirl1987 · 17/11/2018 23:05

Yes Infacol made no difference although seemed to really like the taste... Coleif we found very hard to administer while breastfeedin, ended up expressing 10ml of milk and feeding through a syringe but didn't notice a difference within a few days so stopped as it was difficult!

Been dairy free for more than two weeks now and no change except POSSIBLY less grumpy?

Interesting so many of you say it sounds like his tongue tie causing these symptoms! How could the TT cause his explosive (and mucussy) stools though? Did anyone else's baby have that with a TT?
Thanks so much for the advice and the web links and suggestions- really appreciated! @fuchsiaG silent reflux was the GP's first thought for my son actually but infant gaviscon did nothing for him... i think the symotons of reflux and cmpa are quite similar?
