hi did/does anyone else get deep breast pain after feeding? i'm taking thrush medication and so is dd (nearly 2wks old) but the pain is constant and i'm not sure its thrush that i've actually got. the pain is grinding me down a bit, it gets a bit better when i feed but when i first latch on its intense. i've seen bf midwife twice and gp this week!! but just wondered if anyone else had this? thanks in advance

I've had something similar at the weekend but doesn't sound like it was as bad as yours. I thought that it was a blocked duct and have been putting hot flannels on it, massaging gently whilst feeding, having hot baths and taking Nurofen - fingers crossed it seems to have almost gone now. Good luck!

Thrush does give deep breast pain. You can take ibuprofen which really helped.

What medication are you taking?

rubyroo · 19/06/2007 20:04

difflucan tablets and daktarin cream for me and dd. i have been taking ibuprofen continously but it doesn't have much impact. i don't have any other symptoms of thrush and neither does dd but with dd1 i got a really bad bacterial infection in the first few days and had to stop bf so they thought it was better to take action straight away. i do have a slight crack to 1 nipple which is worrying me that i might get a bacterial infection again. i feel a bit low as have been trying really hard with bf but beginning to question whether its worth it feeling like this. i know it might only be short term so am trying to tellmyself in a couple of days it will feel better.

Have you not been given flucloxacillin?

you also need cream to put on your nipples.

rubyroo · 19/06/2007 20:38

we've got the cream for my nipples and gel for her mouth. the difflucan is what the breastfeeding network recommend and i took a high dose yesterday and have to take for 10-14days lower dose. i guess i'm worried that this isn't just thrush but something else like last time.

If it is thrush (and it does sound like mine felt), it can take 5 days for the meds to really take effect - take it 1 day at a time. It took 6 days of tablets for my symptons to begin to disappear!

And don't forget to keep on with the creams for at least 5 days after the tablets are finished - thrush is horrid and very persistent.

Ruby is it like a deep hot burning stinging sensation that you can't really describe??!

rubyroo · 20/06/2007 19:37

thanks for the posts everyone i went for a bath/feeding time etc last night!! am feeling better today pain has lessened so it must be thrush, it is a deep burning/stinging pain lucylu. i also went back to m&s and got re-measured for my bra and got a different size just in case that was making it worse. am going to take it one day at a time debscee and not worry about how i'll cope when dh goes back to work on tuesday!!

I had something similar ruby - it wasn't thrush it was a type of raynauds of the nipple - does it turn bright white after feeding? If it's the same it can (but not always) be caused by a shallow latch. I found that heat on my boob (hand inside bra, hairdryer on low setting, small hot water bottle) after feeding helped a lot to ease the stinging sensation as if it is that it is caused by the change in temp from being in babies warm mouth then not x

also www.kellymom.com has lots of info on it - look under vasospasm

rubyroo · 21/06/2007 20:35

oh lucylu, i think it might be that have just read article on kellymom, and i have been putting hot gel pads on my breasts to help with the pain and yes they do look white and sometimes blueish after feeding. do i need to see the dr about it or is it something you can self treat with the suggestions on the website? how long does it last? please don't say the whole time you breastfed?

Ruby - I did a thread on my experience with it - have a read it has some good suggestions (DebsCee took vitamin B6 in a high dose prescribed by GP which really helped her). I did stop b/f at 10 weeks but not just because of that as you will see from the thread link is www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=1364&threadid=323241#6530195 Hope this helps chick x ps you've done brilliantly getting this far!

rubyroo · 22/06/2007 11:52

thanks lucylu, am going to try b6 and get my latch checked again on tues at bf support group. i think just knowing what it might be helps and its made me feel less stressed which can only help! thanks for all your help
