13mo has taken a chunk out of my nipple. How do I manage this now?

DS 13mo has been poorly this week and abit over zealous with his feeds. He only has two, one in the morning and one at night. He bit me hard last night but I didnt think to check it (i am ill too so went straight to bed). Rolled over in the night and shot up like a lightning bolt with searing pain in my nipple. There is a small pea size chunk/scrape missing on the side. Its now a little gunky and sticking to my bra and tearing off the top layer everytime I move....ouch. Feeding him this morn was agony.

I am worried about

A) infection
B) how on earth do i feed him tonight??

Ouch! This happened with dd who had lots of teeth at 7mo (not quite as bad as this by the sounds of it) but use breast pads in your bra and maybe antiseptic/ nipple cream to help stop irritation and infection. Keep a really close eye on it, keep it clean and see the gp if you think it might be getting infected. You may need to just feed from the other side for the next week to give it a real chance to heal as I imagine it will be too painful for him to latch on and you're risking teeth accidentally catching it and hurting you more. You could express minimally to take the edge off on that side but ideally the supply should temporarily go down a bit if you're not feeding from it for a little while. I found I was able to dream feed from the injured side a bit as dd faffed much less when asleep. I feel your pain Op it's horrible until it gets a bit better, hopefully the skin will start to heal in the next few days take paracetamol to take the edge off when you need to.

My DD did this to me ar a similar age, but she sneezed when feeding. It bled everywhere but it healed really quickly. I fed her exclusively from the other side for about 3 days, and expressed by hand on the injured side, just enough to stop my breast getting swollen and painful. After that it was sensitive for another few days but not exactly painful, and I just made sure she had that side 2nd. Cream and breast pads definitely a good idea though! Flowers, it's not nice at all.....

Thank you I will dig out some breast pads and apply some lansinoh.
