I wish I had advice to offer you. Instead I can only offer sympathy, because I've been there. It's very frustrating.

sorry to say we tried and tried with our ds. He didn't take a bottle for a long time. I finally bypassed bottles and started him on tomee tippee cups at about 4 moonths old. Again, sorry to say that I don't think he had a proper drink until he was at least 6 months old. nearly did my head in.
I had to put my return to work back.
But, my friend's baby took her bottle from her mother when she went out for the day. This was after weeks of my friend and her dh trying. My friend left the house at 8am and was worried sick. Her mum called her at 8.15am to say her dd had just taken 6 oz from bottle no problem.
I didn't leave my ds with anyone like that, so this may have worked for him
Good luck, I really sympathise. How old is your baby btw?

Spanna2 · 28/08/2004 18:09

My friend tried every bottle, teat and cup on the market and her DD would never take bottle...she went back to work full time (DD was 6 months)....fed morning and night, expressed at work (to send to nursery, mix with food and keep milk supply up for the weekends) Her DD would rarely take the expressed milk at nursery and they would try her every day with a cup, with a little success some days. She just had juice in the day. She hasn't even bothered trying with her DS. Try not to worry...just keep trying with a cup (Doidy cups are very good) and remember that Oct is a long way away yet and she won't starve herself!

Menace..I sympathise with you and know how hard/frustrating/upsetting it is not to get baby to take bottle. My DS is now 6 and a half months old and although took a bottle on a few occasions prefered b/f and I have been back to work full time since he was 4 and a half months old he initially he would take the odd few ounces from dh but he now only takes water from a anyway up cup and occasionally an ounce of milk. We cheat by mixing in milk with his feeds and I feed him more when I am at home. He is rarely very hungry when I get home from work and tends to top up during the night. A few weeks ago he wasin hospital with a viral infection and he had become dehydrated I was mortified thinking it was because he would not take the bottle when I was at work, the paedietrician informed me his nutrition was fine and it was nothing to do with his lack of milk. She also said some babies drink more than others some eat more and that as long as his nappies are wet etc then not to drive myself mad with worry!! Just to let you know it does get easier but I know how worried you are cause I have been there!! Good Luck.

You need playtex, available from small independant chemists. Saved us.

mears · 28/08/2004 20:49

Am I right that you are not going back to work till October? If so I would leave it for now. If it becomed a battleground you will all get upset. Leave it for a few weeks.

I guess you did try starting her on the breast, waiting for the milk to flow then sliding her off and inserting teat?

Spanna2 · 28/08/2004 21:03

Basically a cup with a slanted top that is recommended by the health authorities to aid training babies to feed from a cup instead of the bottle. My friend's DD would drink only from this. My DD has used hers from about 6 months and still uses it now, (25 months)as she can put it down easily without spills. You get them from \link{https://secure.bickiepegs.co.uk/acatalog/}

I think you can get similar things from mobility/disability shops (?!) for adults who find using a regular cup difficult.

Spanna2 · 28/08/2004 21:07

Have a look at \link{https://secure.bickiepegs.co.uk/acatalog/this}

Spanna2 · 28/08/2004 21:07

Why won't the link thingy work.....o heck!!

pupuce · 28/08/2004 21:19

That's exactly what I suggested yesterday Mears .... leave it for a while !
Menace - you are stressing and she knows it...... she will drink from bottle or spout when she needs to! Have faith

pupuce · 28/08/2004 21:21

This is the link that Spanna is trying to make ... it's all a question of "/" being in the right direction

Spanna2 · 28/08/2004 22:12

Thanx

tashy · 28/08/2004 22:27

Menace - I'm sure it will work in time - my ds took quite a while, it definitely helps if someone else does the bottle though, as she associates YOU with breastfeeding. Maybe give it a break for a few days and then try again, or if you want to presist, just try one feed a day on the bottle, e.g. mid-morning.
