What drinks do you give at breakfast time?

I'm struggling with my 3.5 year old and fluids at breakfast. I know milk and water are the best options. She won't drink milk as a drink of itself but I often add extra milk to cereal and get her to drink from the bowl. She will sometimes ask for water but mostly doesn't drink much at breakfast. She doesn't like fruit juice. Have tried her with Nesquik (chocolate) which she likes but is this quite sugary to have every day? She will drink squash but really don't want to give her this at breakfast!

What drinks do you give at breakfast? I could really do with some ideas!!!☺

I only give my dc water or milk to drink.

DrWhy · 21/10/2018 21:01

Sorry but it’s milk or water here too. DS is still only 2 though and loved his milk so it hasn’t yet become a battle.

MrsSiba · 21/10/2018 21:04

Lucky you! I offer both too just no take up!

Water, sometimes a smoothie or a little milkshake too.

elvislives2012 · 21/10/2018 21:32

Water here. Recently cut out squash. Didn't tell them it's just not there any more so they're very happy with water now. No mowing. They'll drink if they need too

Givemeallyourcucumber · 21/10/2018 21:36

Sorry, I only offer water or milk too.
Just keep offering water only. She will get the idea sooner or later.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/10/2018 08:38

Is she peeing and pooing normally? If so, she’s probably just not thirsty OP.

Milk or water at that age here too.

DunesOfSand · 22/10/2018 08:48

DS1 (9) has milk.
DS2 (7) has water.
I have water.
DH has tea.

DS2 isn't allowed to get down until cup of water is finished. But it's HOT here, and fluid intake is a massive issue for him (and me), like he would happily have half a cup at breakfast, a carton of fruit juice at lunch, and half a cup at dinner. Water bottle untouched. I basically have to ensure he drinks a full cup every meal and snack.

Water or milk. I’ve managed to convince dd that sparkling water is juice so she’ll have that for a treat, waiting to see how long that one will last for!

Thesearmsofmine · 22/10/2018 08:54

Milk or water here (7, 5, 2) occasionally on birthdays they will have fruit juice or a flavoured milk. My 5 year old doesn’t drink much at breakfast so I just give him a small amount and then he has a bottle of water which he drinks from when he wants.

whatifido · 22/10/2018 08:57

I use nesquik in their morning glass of milk, I know its quiet sweet but I'm extra careful on their intake for the rest of the day and it does contain added vitamins and minerals so I don't need to give the otherwise recommended supplements.
Both mine refused cow milk so I'd rather them drink it as a milk shake and get the goodness rather than not at all!

LeslieYep · 22/10/2018 09:09

My DD loves her water too, but we still have a cup of warm milk first thing.

She has started asking for a cup of tea though, which I make with decaf tea bags and is half milk half water.

jomaIone · 22/10/2018 09:23

Squash is much much better than bloody chocolate Nesquick!!!

Dilute 1 part squash to 10 parts water.

There's not really anything else you can give her?

Jackshouse · 22/10/2018 09:28

My DD loves milk but not cold from the fridge so I always pop her milk in the microwave.

I often give DD hot chocolate. In winter after play outside but it is literally cocoa powder and milk.

IMissGin · 22/10/2018 09:31

Milk at breakfast and bed time. Water the rest of the day. He has no idea there are alternatives (19mo) his sister is 7, she doesn’t like drinking milk so has water mostly but squash or a weak tea on occasion- she mostly chooses water.

lovelyjubilly · 22/10/2018 09:40

This is such a mn thing, only giving milk and water. Every child I have ever met in real life (age 2 and above probably) drinks juice and squash.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 22/10/2018 09:53

No added sugar squash or milk.

TeddyIsaHe · 22/10/2018 10:57

lovely it’s not a MN thing, it’s a health thing. 2 year olds don’t need juice/artificial sweeteners/added sugar in their diets.

DrWhy · 22/10/2018 11:41

Have you tried slicing some orange/lemon/cucumber and adding it to the water? It’s adding very little juice/sugar but will slightly change the flavour and be a bit of a novelty? I’ve just remembered that a couple of restaurants did this on holiday and DS thought it was great.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/10/2018 18:39

lovely I only found MN when pg with DC2. DC1 was at the time a 2 yo how only ever had milk or water. I agree that there might be more MNers who do floor this but I was definitely doing it before I found MN Smile

mindutopia · 23/10/2018 21:10

Water. If they're thirsty, they drink. If not, you don't need to worry about it. Just make sure water is available freely throughout the day. They don't necessarily need to drink at meals as long as they drink at some point.

Dontfeellikeaskeleton · 23/10/2018 21:11

You could do warm milk with a drop of vanilla in it.

UnalliterativeGeorge · 23/10/2018 21:15

Squash. They get water with dinner because of recent potty training but the smallest won't ever drink it and I'd rather she had squash than nothing!

DunesOfSand · 24/10/2018 04:33

mindutopia not necessarily. I have to drink (a pint) with each meal. Otherwise I literally don't drink. I don't feel thirsty very often. So I drink by automation, not regulation. DS2 looks to be similar, and would drink about 2 half cups of fluid a day unless pushed (or offered lemonade!). If my wee looks dark, I have a glass of water. Urine colour is normally my first indication I've skipped a meal, and hence a drink.
