I have just got my 8 month developement check through and am umming about if we should go or not. I have got not concerns at all with DS, he is on the lighter side but doing all he should be, sleeing through, happy etc. Its just when I see the HV we always seem to do battle re bfing & I cant be facing another arguement. They have always wanted me to supplement- wean early etc & I ignored their advice. I have just had a chat to them re appointment & they have also expressed concern about the fact I am expecting again & still bfing. We have made the decision to keep bfeeding & its not up for negotiation so are these a really vital thing to go to or shall i go with my gut & just cancel to save the agro?

Many places have abandoned the 8 mth check, mush.

You must live in an area where the HVs really have not much to do, so they harrass mothers of perfectly healthy babies with their outdated 'knowledge'.

Perhaps ask them the benefits to you or your baby of this check, and ask them why when other areas have dropped this check (except for babies about whose development or family life there are concerns) they still do them?

this site shows current evidence-based guidance on the sort of routine surveillance offered to UK families; checks at 7-9 months are not recommended except in cases of need.

My HV no longer does the eight month assessment, i think there used to be one at 13 months too... they no longer do that either.

If you feel that your baby is progressing at the normal rate then there really is no need for you to go and get all stressed about the whole thing. Esp if your pregnant again.

The only reason i would say u should go is if you had concerns about the developement of your ds.

Have you tried chaning your HV?

HV's . When DS was tiny we got a visit from a social worker as I was delaying giving him his jabs (we hadn't decided if we wanted to), and apparantly didn't take him to get weighed often enough.

Biggest bloody waste of time for all involved.

determination · 15/06/2007 16:43

my dd is nearly 15 weeks now and she was last weighed at 6 weeks... am i neglecting her? She is clearly gaining weight and developing well.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 15/06/2007 16:46

not in my opinion. DS was fine too, I know some people go to the clinic every week, but that is just excessive imo.

Thanks for reassurance. Think they also want to talk to me about lack of weigh ins attended & immunusatioons but when I just asked them they said we needed to talk about weaning & how to do it quickly before next LO arrived. I told them again no- its not happenning unless DS decided to give up the boob. She asked me what I would do if it didnt & was horrified when I said feed both- saying how next LO wont get enough- blah blah blah blah so just cancelled the appointment. have also called the surgery & told them to send them a note to say I do not want to have another one rebooked & I know where they are if I need them!
