Possible allergy to follow-on milk?

My 6 1/2 month old has been ebf until now and has also just started solids (pureed veg/fruit). Today i gave him 3oz follow on milk (Hipp), instead of usual breastfeed. A couple of hrs later his face and back went all blotchy. It's now 8 hrs since i gave him that feed and he's still very blotchy. Has anyone else's lo had a similar reaction to follow-on milk?

what food has he had today?

NotQuiteCockney · 13/06/2007 18:48

Has he had dairy before? Are there allergies/asthma/exzema/hay fever in the family?

A reaction a few hours later is unusual, I think.

today he's eaten some sweet potato mixed with a little banana and ebm. he's eaten this before so don't think this is causing it. had no dairy before. he does have mild eczema, probably inherited from me and i suffer from hayfever too.

My memory is hazy but I thought they had follow on milk at 12 months.

Seona1973 · 13/06/2007 19:24

follow on milk is from 6 months. could be a reaction to cows milk protein from the milk if your lo has not had any other dairy before

dragonfruit · 13/06/2007 19:24

it's suitable from 6 months onwards

so could be a case of his body needing to get used to dairy, rather than not being able to tolerate dairy at all?

My friend's baby had a reaction to cow's milk protein in formula the first time she tried it at 6 months. It was similar to what you describe, but was immediate, i.e. before she'd even finished an ounce. And she threw it back up as well. She reacted to just the touch of it on her lips.

If he's still blotchy tomorrow, maybe take him to the GP to see. If nothing else, they can refer you to have allergy tests done, and you could carry on bf in the meantime or introduce a soya or goats milk formula maybe if you really wanted to stop bf.

i wanted to get him used to taking the occasional formula feed as going away for hte day next w/end and leaving him with mil and won't be able to express enough for the number of feeds that i;ll miss.
would goat's milk not cause similar problem?

You can't get goat's milk formula any more, I don't think.

Oh, and follow-on milk is an advertising scam, by the way. Normal formula is right for this age.

I don't know what to say about the blotchy thing. Any chance it's heat rash? It doesn't sound classically like an allergy.

It's worth noting, allergies normally are obvious the second time a child is exposed to something, so I'd maybe give a tiny bit of formula (or maybe just rub it on his skin?) and see what happens.

dragonfruit · 13/06/2007 21:17

doubt it's heat rash as hasn't been particularly hot today. will try giving him a little more formula to see if it aggravates skin. thanks for advice
