DD3 is 11 days old and has lost over 10% of her birth weight and has been weighed again today and has lost a few more grams since Monday.

The Midwife said it is probably because she isn't getting the hindmilk as she feeds so often (every hour to hour and half)for around 10 to 15 mins before she falls fast asleep and slips off the breast or uses me as a dummy. I am still having a bit of bother with DD latching on although the midwife said it was fine but it kills!!.

She also has told me to feed her every 2.5 hours and even if she falls asleep keep her there whilst trying to wake her up, until at least 30 mins are up. (hoping this does something)

Has anyone elses baby lost weight like this before and has taken a while to put it back on??

I really really want to avoid putting her on formula. Breastfeeding was one of my big ambitions for most of my PG as I failed miserably with DD1&2. Obviously if I have to I will but am so desperate to get this sorted.

Any advice please.

Ps: DD has lots of pooey nappies during the day and wet ones.

Determination I have started with the compressions this morning and I have noticed as well as DD getting the milk (swallows after) it has also helped keep her on when she starts getting fussy and unlatching herself. Fab advice thanks.

My3Girls - it does sound like you have some thrush there - I don't know much about that, but there are loads of threads on here if you do a search.

Night feeds - if you're going to give formula in the night, can I tentatively suggest that you express at the time you would have fed - the night feeds are really important for stimulating your milk supply, as that is when the hormone (prolactin?) is at its highest.

Glad your mum is there to help. x

My friend's baby did that. In the end, they found that he had a tongue-tie (where the flap of skin anchoring it is set too far forwards) which makes sticking the tongue, necessary for efficient feeding from a nipple, very ineffective). In his case, they snipped it a little (medical staff are very used to doing this) and he began to feed better. He still did not gain weight especially fast, and is only now beginning to put on weight (he is 8 months). He currently weighs about 12-13lbs, but is otherwise fit and healthy and hitting his milestones.

She had a lot of trouble on her hands trying to keep him fully breastfed, and they actually put him on supplementary formula for a couple of weeks (in a situation where she was led to understand that withholding her consent would lead to the decision being taken out of her hands- very stressful situation all round). He carried on losing weight, and they "allowed" her to go back to fully breast-feeding.

I am not suggesting that any of this is the case with your baby, just that if you are worried about her (ie not enough wet/dirty nappies in a day, listless, etc...), then there a number of simple medical conditions that might be causing. Midwives and medical staff can sometimes worry too early, IMO.
