P ropped up in bed this morning feeding ds with breastpump on other breast DP ran into the room looking stricken. He put his arm around me and said there was some bad news. I sat up all worried and then told me that the freezer had defrosted overnight. Loads of meat and fish ruined which is annoying but worst of all about 15 * 200ml bags of MY PRECIOUS MILK. Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
I'm gutted.

Oh no! sorry to hear that, we had that happen recently although no milk!

Amberjee · 08/06/2007 10:23

oh poor you nymph.

nymph · 08/06/2007 11:11

Thanks for the sympathy. At least DP is getting an idea of how heartbreaking it is to lose it. Last time I shouted at him when he spilt about 150ml when pouring it from bag into bottle and he was stupid enough to say 'it's only milk'.
Babs is getting all ebm bottles today to use it up and so I can use the fresh stuff to replenish supplies. Sob. Such a waste having to pour away the rest of it.

I`D be gutted too. Sorry about that... Your DP sounds lovely though.

dcb · 08/06/2007 14:03

how long will it last for - could you use any tomorrow????

i empathise really i do - it's v precious

Katy44 · 08/06/2007 14:05

That would be my worst nightmare
Off to check the freezer door

PrettyCandles · 08/06/2007 14:11

Oh god that is awful. EBM is like those credit card ads: priceless.

Jenkeywoo · 08/06/2007 14:13

I'm so sorry, that is really gutting. I hope you are able to replenish stocks soon. I wonder how you would be able to claim for that on house contents insurance?

nymph · 08/06/2007 16:14

Well happily I've replenished two bags already as I'm just using the now unfrozen milk to feed so can express everything. I dont think it'd be safe to use the defrosted milk tomorrow though - anyone know how long its ok for after its been defrosted? Presumably like meat, once you defrost it use it same day?
Have to laugh about the insurance claim - free and yet priceless - so annoying.

I had 20 odd bags, none of which could be used due to a problem with my milk!! AARghhhhh!!!!

nymph · 08/06/2007 16:22

How annoying - was it a problem with your dc and your milk or with the milk itself? I'd be devastated after going to all that effort not to be able to use it

the breastfeeding network says for previously frozen breastmilk:

  • defrosted in fridge - use within 12 hours
  • defrosted outside fridge - use immediately

hope that's helpful.
