Questions about SMA 'Follow-on' milk at 6 months...

My DS is just over 6 months and I'm now wondering if he needs to move onto SMA 'follow-on' milk? He has been almost exclusively breast-fed until the last two weeks, but I'm now weaning him off me and onto more SMA Gold.
I have two questions:

  1. is 'Follow-on' milk (and its iron-giving properties) a gimmick, or is it worthwhile for a big, growing baby boy?
  2. and if so, is now the right time to upgrade? Any advice welcomed, thank you!

its a gimmick, no need to switch over milk at all.

i think follow on milk is less filling so i wouldn;t.

My DS was completely BF until he was 5/6 months but because he was always on the small side and once he got into proper food, he never had a big appetite, I just gave him SMA red.

I wanted him to have a good store of iron as he wasn't really into meat and I'm sure SMA would get into big trouble if they claimed to have put more iron into it but hadn't.
I gave him it until he was 2 then put him full fat cows milk. I know they say semi once they're 2 but I think he needs more fat bless him.

I've just read you said your DS was a big baby so no, I wouldn't put him on it.

He is 20lbs 7 at just over 6 months. Only been weaning for the past two weeks so not started on meat yet. therefore concerned about iron- going to try spinich

I did ask my health visitor the same question for DS1 now 2.5yo. I seem to recall that it is the same in calories but there is something different in the compostition of iron/vitamins etc, I am so anal I went and stood in boots reading the labels to compare ingredients. You could do that just to check the differences. There really is not much difference BUT the manufacturers are allowed to market and advertise follow on milk and not 1st infant milk, so its really similar stuff just slightly different packaging so you get familiar with the brand. The follow on milk is just a milk, not like the 'hungry baby' formulas that the hv said just contain bulking agents to make a baby feel full longer!
the follow on milk is exempt from the restrictions on special offers or boots points etc that the 1st infant milk is, so sorry but when I stopped bf at 6m and 8m they went straight on to the follow on milk as it can be much cheaper.

I wouldn't worry - my DS is 27lbs and is 2 yrs 4 months. That's why I thought he should have the iron but you're only just starting to wean a 6 month baby so his iron stores should be ok for a while I'd have thought?
