3 month BF baby with green poo

Hi, My 3 month old B/F baby has been doing green poo for over 4 weeks now. I try to ensure he's emptied one boob b4 moving onto the next and watch what I eat etc etc. I know about fore and hind milk etc but now I'm worried it's something worse cos it's gone on for so long.

However despite my efforts his poo is still green, smelly and has mucas in it. Yesterday he did actually do 2 yellow ones which I thought I'd cracked it but it's green again.

The HV says it's just his gut settling down & not to worry?
Anyone have any ideas cos I'm on the point of going to the Doctor?

Cheers
Wishywashy

Can't really help much .the things I remember are too much foremilk(which you know about) and it can happen if they are digesting the food very quickly. However if it's mucousy I would get it checked out just to put your mind at rest. Is babs putting on weight ok?

moomina · 20/08/2004 22:15

Hi wishywashy.

My ds (now 14 months) was exactly the same at that age. The colour of his nappies used to absolutely freak me out some days! My HV said exactly the same as yours - just things settling down - and after a while it just went of its own accord.

If it would set your mind at rest there's no harm in going to see your GP, but it does sound pretty normal. If he seems fine in other ways I'm sure there's no problem.

My dd is 4 1/2 months. I've been through the same thing. GP said don't worry it will come and go. It did, so don't worry

libb · 20/08/2004 22:26

Wishwashy, my 3mth old does the same occasionally - he seems quite happy and so I don't get too stressed - still doesn't look nice when it happens though! you should join us on the May Babies 2 thread, for mums who can really talk!

Take care xxx

My ds did the same for about 3 or 4 weeks (after a trip home to scotland).
I kept a food diary tried eliminating orange juice or anything else citrussy - but I think in the end it was that I'd been eating salads. Once I stopped them - he was ok. But even now if I have a little bit of lettuce or cucumber it goes back to greenish.

SoupDragon · 29/08/2004 21:07

The advice I was given about green poo was "sometimes it just is".

Wishywashy · 02/09/2004 21:20

Thankyou for all your comments.

I had to take DS to see the Emergency doctor at the Hospital at the weekend as was getting specks of blood in nappy, plus the greeny mucas, stinky poo.

Stool sample taken and he unfortunately has Cryptosporidium which is a form of gastroenteritis.....

No treatment available

Marvellous that you are breastfeeding - the best treatment there is!

how is your ds now ww?

have just searched for this thread as dd's nappies are green very often just lately. mucusy too. i do eat a lot of salads at the moment though, could that be it? apart from the blood, were there any other signs? did her sick a lot? dd does, even 1-2 hours after a feed and it really smells like proper sick. did he look well altogether?

hope all is well x

I know tiktok said before (& she should know) that it doesn't matter as long as they're happy & growing well.

nicmum2boys · 22/09/2004 17:26

Both my DSs had green poo. Wih DS2 it went on for weeks and weeks, from about 7 weeks to weaning. Saw several doctors with DS2 as DS1 had been admitted to hospital with hepatitis type infection at 7 weeks, and I was terrified it was the same thing (it wasn't). DS2 also frequently had blood in his stools, lots of mucous and they smelt foul. Stool sample showed presence of white blood cells, which doc said was a sign of some sort of infection, but they couldn't find out what........in the end was put down to a virus, makes me wonder now if he had cryptosporidium too. Incidentally throughout all of this he was happy, sleeping through at 10 weeks, and gaining weight very nicely. In the end I decided not to worry about it, since nothing I tried diet wise made a difference, and he was happy and otherwise healthy it just became normal poo for him iyswim.
How is your baby now?

SamN · 22/09/2004 22:48

Egypt, the thrashing around and sicking makes me wonder if your dd has reflux? Is she crying lots as if she's hungry but also pulling herself off the breast?

Sam

SamN · 22/09/2004 22:56

Meant to say that if she does have reflux, there is some good advice and links in some older threads here.

sam

Egypt · 23/09/2004 08:33

thanks all. sam, she doesnt cry, but just thrashes, pulls off, looks at me and smiles, comes off to see who else is talking in the room. only time really feeds well is in the night and when i havent fed her for hours. which is why i am thinking iam feeding too often

Wishywashy · 30/09/2004 22:31

Hi All,

Thanks for your replies.
Went to the Dr and decided to ignore the usless advice from the Health Visitor as DS seems to be fussing alot when feeding, crying, bobbing on and off the boob and bottle and seem to associate feeding with having a poo, diarrhoea . Was really worried about him getting dehydrated.
Poo seemed to get even worse and quite profuse, stinky green sometimes black with spots of blood. Horrible, poor boy.

Finally we got referred to the Paediatrician but really he was over it buy the time we got our appointment after 6 weeks of this.

The result actually came back negative in the end for Cryptosporidium and the Dr mis-read the results as the receptionist made a typo. Alot of stress for someone's cockup.

However, DS did have some type of form of Gastroenteritis but they don't know what.

The Dr recommened I gave him some baby rice at 17wks and seemed to help settle his tum within 2 days.
Thankfully DS is now doing very well now and is recovering well and is starting to look like a 'chubby bub' like other babies.

Best wishes WW
