Urgent question regarding watery poo in newly breast feeding newborn.

DD3 is 4 days old and have been breast feeding excusively since she was born. Since passing meconium she has had really runny poos (sry tmi coming up) mustard in colour but like water and as this is my first time breast feeding I am abit worried that it shouldn't be like this. I don't have a midwife coming round until Friday so haven't been able to ask her. Am just looking for reasurance that she is ok. Thanks

Sounds perfectly normal to me. I'm sure an expert will come along in a minute and put your mind at rest.

Hi My3! Congratulations on dd3 4 days old, arrr, coo coo ... Anyway... my ds is now 6wks and fully bf and his poos are exactly as you describe and have been since the meconium ended. Sounds normal to me.

MissGolightly · 06/06/2007 21:41

My breast-fed DS's poos were pretty runny at first - I wouldn't say quite as thin as water, but definitely closer to single cream than double! If she's pooing regularly and they are mustard then it sounds normal to me - but I'm not a medic, just a mum, so I am sure someone expert will be along soon to give chapter and verse.

Sounds normal - isn't it just HORRID!

You'll find that if she lies at the right angle, she should be able to squirt a poo right out of her nappy and all up her back

CONGRATULATIONS - sounds like you are doing a great job btw. Lots of poo means lots of milk. Well done.

MissGolightly · 06/06/2007 21:45

oo yes, I remember that MP. Mustard coming out of the top of the pristine white vest I had put on only moments before...

ahhh...

feeling almost broody!

rainbow83 · 06/06/2007 21:48

oh, yes,

watery, mustardy, explosive, sounds fine!

But check with midwife if you're worried, you can always ring them.

My3Girls · 06/06/2007 21:52

Mustard is a good colour. Greenish is not so good but not to worry about it.

I never found breastfed babies poo that offensive UNLESS it goes up the back onto all the clothes! And they do parp a lot as littley's, don't they? Little blunderbusses!

My3Girls · 06/06/2007 21:54

Mrs Carrot I haven't had a great time with the care I have recived during this PG there is very rarely anyone there to ask

I remember dd on the phone talking to her cousin about her new brother when I took off his nappy and didn't get the new one under him quite fast enough and he sprayed mustard yellow all over the living room carpet. The graphic running commentary lives on in family legend!

That's what they are supposed to look like, My3girls - they should smell not too bad either. My sil thinks they smell of cinnamon, but I think that's taking baby worship a bit far.....

Trinityrhino · 06/06/2007 21:57

my friend who has 3 kids and has never BF chnaged my little ones nappy yesterday whilst I went to the shop and when I came back she said'oh I think Gecko has the runs. It was a pooey nappy but all up her back and thin and yellowy brown'

morocco · 06/06/2007 22:01

get yourselves some washable nappies, ladies, no more poo all the way up to the neck!!

My3Girls · 06/06/2007 22:04

LOL DD hasn't managed up the back yet but from the sounds of it it won't be long
